Rebecca - GREAT BLOG! As a community we can strive to better appreciate the value produced AND RETURNED by the Arts... priceless!

You can count on our lobbying effort to help promote financial resources to help artists call downtown home! On it!

Music is therapy for the human soul. One need only look at the success of a music program in Caracas. Students who are taught to play a musical instrument renounce gang activity and violence. As quoted in a June 24, 2008 Reuters article, "The orchestra is my family, nothing has ever grabbed me like this before," said Francisco Henriques, 14, practicing trombone on the roof of his hillside home, accompanied by his cat, Trumpet. "Music is everything I have ever wished for." England, Scotland and Los Angeles are implementing similar programs. When the soul is in balance, everyone benefits.

Here's what resonates with me: "students who participate in the arts are four times more likely to be committed to community service projects." By nurturing self-expression and creativity through the arts, we develop citizens who are more likely to bring those skills to community betterment. Imagine a Rockford that's revitalized by a mass of innovators who are products of the local school system.

Sorry I missed the event. (Didn\'t get an invitation!) I really should have been present to represent Rockford Operetta Party. *sigh* Oh well. Maybe next year. At least the community is keeping the arts alive.
