First of all 15 minutes isn't going to do anything for a band and quite frankly a couple of hundred bucks isn't going to be that helpful in the end. Wing Ding is an event that isn't about local bands plain and simple. There are plenty of events that showcase local bands. Ask yourself one question...Will more people attend Wing Ding becasue it has a couple of local bands playing at the beginning? Chances are people will just show up an hour later. You have to ask as well, why aren't there that many venues or outlets for local music. It's because they have failed . It's not from lack of trying by venues, it's just that the bands haven't been that good in recent years. It's not lack of talent, it is lack of talent getting together. You can say that is my opinion and it is, but you have made my case with your email. In order for something to be succcessful, people have to want to hear it. I would say that the "local scene" should do, is figure out "what people like" or if they want to play in front of the masses. It's as easy as this. Give one or two local bands the chance to play for 15 mins before the national acts start. Charge each band $300 for a 15min set, its a sure way to make more money, plus it helps out the local music scene by getting local music out their to people that might not know what the local scene is all about. Rockford needs more events/venues/outlets for local music, with little or no radio play locals really have to bust ass to be heard in this city. 10 years ago this city's music scene was huge, but now it seems to be slowly dieing.
