Awesome ode and “snotty pre-teen brats” win Love/Hate Wing Ding contest

May 19th, 2008 at 01:55pm Georgette Braun

Barb Rhodes, you are the Love Wing Ding winner with a wickedly awesome ode of sorts.

Call me at 815-987-1331 as soon as possible but by 9 a.m. Tuesday to claim your two free tickets and the coveted parking pass to the May 25 all-day long rock concert at Rockford Speedway. You’ll of course have to show me identification to prove you are who you say you are.

Her entry and an explanation of it are No. 24 and 25 in my blog Love It/Hate It contest.

“I’d go “ALL THE WAY” through “HELL AND HIGH WATER” for the Wing Ding when Rockford’s “ALIVE” with 25,000 “BODIES” who “STAND UP FOR ROCK ‘N’ ROLL!” Any “WICKED SOUL” who complains hasn’t experienced this event. Otherwise, they’d say it’s “THE FAD” and be “ADDICTED.” I’m “SO HAPPY” for this tradition!”

25. Barb Rhodes  |  May 19th, 2008 at 10:48 amJust in case it wasn’t clear in the above blog, the words in caps & quotes indicate a song title from each of the nine 2008 Wing Ding bands:
All the Way - The Last Vegas
Hell and High Water - Black Stone Cherry
Alive - P.O.D.
Bodies - Drowning Pool
Stand Up For Rock ‘n’ Roll - Airbourne
Wicked Soul - Another Black Day
The Fad - Chevelle
Addicted - Saving Abel
So Happy - Theory of a Dead Man

The Hate Wing Ding winner is Tyler E. who gets free earplugs. Tyler: Please call me at 815-987-1331, even if you don’t wanna spend the gas money to claim your prize. Please do so as soon as possible but by 9 a.m. Tuesday. His post:

“I hate Wing Ding and here’s why… horrible weather, crowded beyond belief, but most of all: an entire day’s worth of radio-friendly pre-pubescent “hard rock” and an excuse for snotty pre-teen brats who think they’re cool because they just spent their allowance on a black t-shirt at Hot Topic to act like hooligans. These kids would have no idea how to act at a REAL metal show. WXRX is a joke, the current music scene is a joke, and people need to grow up and realize there is more music out there than the garbage they are force-fed by the radio. How could nu-metal still possibly be alive in 2008? It boggles the mind.”

Why can’t we go back to the old days when the Wing-Ding was held at the Moose Club on North Main Street and local restaurants had booths where they served up their chicken wings??

That is how they did back then. I haven’t been to one since; sounds like it has changed a little?

Back then, the event was “manageable”. The only problem was that if you wanted some wings you might have to wait a long time for each place to get a batch done in the fryer. How does it compare, then and now?

Leatherneck: 23,000 people attended last year.
nine national rock bands this year
    it’s at rockford speedway
still can buy wings: from Hooters on property
for more info, read my column in register star thursday
it’s also online now at rrstar.com
    or go to wxrx.com

So in other words, Hooters exclusively makes all the wings and it is not a “contest” as such?? Hmmm.
This will mean that they can make them in large quantities and you don’t have to wait at the booth for a place to get them done in the fryer.
When it was at the Moose Club in the early 90s, i think there were bands. But not 23,000 people. Wow. Does anybody remember the early days of the Wing Ding that I am talking about? I was at the very first one and the second one too. It rained both times.
    I had a t-shirt from it.
Do they still sell have t-shirts for the Wing Ding?

There’s actually a retrospective listing all the bands & Wing Ding History on the WXRX website. It has pictures, weather, etc. It brings back a lot of memories.

Leatherneck: I haven’t seen Wing Ding T-shirts for sale in past years, but WXRX has given out some as prizes

My girl and I are looking for two t shirts that they were handing out at the concert in the parking lot before the event. When we go there at 11:30 there was nobody walking around selling them. We got some last year and want this years shirt. Can you possibly help us? Its a private vendor or something, they weren\’t selling them in the speedway. They are the ones that had the listing down the back in rows. We are willing to pay for them. Please let me know if you know anybody willing to sell an XL and an L or if you know who the private vendor is.

I am also looking for a Wing Ding t-shirt! I was looking all over for the people who were selling them and found nobody. I saw people wearing the 2008 shirt, but couldn\’t find the people selling them. I am looking for 2 XL shirts and 3 large if anyone can find the person that sells them. Please email me if you know. sclark79@sbcglobal.net. Thanks!

To all you Wing Ding T-shirt wanters: Just talked with Stone at the X. He says the T-shirts being sold in the parking lot were bootlegged, and he doesn’t know who was selling ‘em.
Will the X sell ‘em next year? No, Stone says. Why? Cuz it would take away time that staff have to devote to making other aspects of Wing Ding go.
Hope you Wing Ding T-shirt seekers find the folks who were selling ‘em.
