Unemployment stats are depressing but there are still many high paying jobs posted on employment sites i.e.

http://www.realmatch.com
http://www.monster.com
http://www.simplyhired.com

There still seems to be a strong demand for professional talent. This is actually contradictory to many of the stats in the media.

hokumboy: Great observation on the union angle. Thanks for words of encouragement about my son's safety via his coworkers. I want so much to believe that.

Did you notice how many of those good jobs were Union . Another argument for the value of Union Labor. Something to toss around the office?
By the way, don't worry too much about your son's safety on the job.
His union brothers/sisters will watch out for him. That's what they do.
