What won’t you give up in a recession?

On “The Today Show” this morning, Ann Curry interviewed a woman who gave advice on cutting costs during harder economic times caused in part by the record-setting $4-a-gallon gasoline set nationally today.

Tips included giving up bottled water and paying credit card bills on time so you won’t have to pay a late fee.

I’m not yet to the point where I’ll give up bottled water totally.

What won’t you give up locally in hard times? That delicious fish fry on Friday nights? That trip every week to the raceway? Pedicures?

Harder economic times? Please. I think the whole “gas affecting my entire life” thing is being blown way out of proportion.

If people are still spending $2+ on a bottle of something they can get at home for FREE, they have plenty of discretionary income.

I can’t stand the hypocrisy of people complaining about the price of filling up their SUV, while they’re simultaneously drinking a $4.75 mocha-whatever from Starbucks.

the: To clarify: I pay $3.99 for 24 bottles of water. Yes, I pay for the convenience, and am drinking less in bottles lately.
I don’t drink coffee and never have bought one thing at Starbucks. And yes, I have an SUV I wish I didn’t have (bought it when gas was $1.75 a gallon) and postponed getting rid of it because I didn’t wanna buy another used car (can’t buy new) that might have other problems. You know “the devil you know” saying.

So, I’m kind of stuck, and my disposable income is dwindling, what with gas, health care costs and food prices rising.

Maybe others are in the same boat?

    Geo,
take an empty water bottle, and fill it 1/4 full of motor oil. Then fill it to the brim with water. Not very appealing, is it?
That’s how much oil it takes to produce and distribute that bottle of water.
    Buy a Brita!

hokumboy: Man am I a terrible conservationist. I will more earnestly consider not drinking bottled water.

I won’t give up reading this blog in the recession. I absolutely refuse. It keeps me on the cutting edge of information, always.
