Scoop: Oprah to announce ‘Sawtelle’ book Friday as latest Book Club selection

September 17th, 2008 at 09:38am Georgette Braun

For the tens of thousands, if not millions, of you who are fans of Oprah’s Book Club, I’ve got a scoop for you.

A source who wishes to remain unnamed tells me that Oprah on Friday will announce the group’s next selection: “The Story of Edgar Sawtelle.”

It’s a novel by David Wroblewski. Here’s the description from amazon.com:

Born mute, speaking only in sign, Edgar Sawtelle leads an idyllic life with his parents on their farm in remote northern Wisconsin. For generations, the Sawtelles have raised and trained a fictional breed of dog whose thoughtful companionship is epitomized by Almondine, Edgar’s lifelong friend and ally. But with the unexpected return of Claude, Edgar’s paternal uncle, turmoil consumes the Sawtelles’ once peaceful home. When Edgar’s father dies suddenly, Claude insinuates himself into the life of the farm–and into Edgar’s mother’s affections.

Grief-stricken and bewildered, Edgar tries to prove Claude played a role in his father’s death, but his plan backfires–spectacularly. Forced to flee into the vast wilderness lying beyond the farm, Edgar comes of age in the wild, fighting for his survival and that of the three yearling dogs who follow him. But his need to face his father’s murderer and his devotion to the Sawtelle dogs turn Edgar ever homeward.

    Georgette,

That book sounds intersting. I have read many of Oprah’s picks in the past and am currently working on The Secret Life of Bees before the movie comes out. I wonder how you got this “scoop” as audience members have to sign confidentiality agreements. I was at a taping - actually sat through two - last Tuesday, but my shows haven’t appeared onair as of yet. It was an interesting experience to be sure.

Georgia: Can’t reveal my source for the scoop. Sorry. As soon as you can tell about your experience in Oprah audience, please do so here.

    Geo,
how about a 5th ballot choice of:

O Whether or not Oprah recommends a book has no bearing on my reading choices.

To many of us in the world Oprah is a person of no consequence.

My source (and therefore me) was right:

Oprah Picks Edgar Sawtelle; Ecco Goes Back to Press for 750,000 Copies
By Lynn Andriani — Publishers Weekly, 9/19/2008 9:18:00 AM

Oprah Winfrey revealed her 62nd book club selection today: The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, Ecco’s runaway summer bestseller. The debut novel by David Wroblewski hit stores in June, was an instant bestseller, and has 300,000 copies in print, said director of publicity Michael McKenzie. Following Winfrey’s announcement, Ecco is going back to press for an additional 750,000 copies. Of her choice, Winfrey said, ” I think this book is right up there with the greatest American novels ever written.”
