Can you help this dad who wants to learn to cook?

IÂ received an e-mail from a local guy who needs help. Read my suggestions in the comments section. If you have any, please do the same:
I was wondering if you could help me with a little problem I am having. I am a recently divorced father of three great kids and I would really like to learn how to cook! I have attempted to find these classes on my own to no avail. I don’t want to learn some exotic dish, or how to cook “McGyver” style..just your basics with room to grow. I dont want to buy pizza every other weekend, you know? Any info you can give me or assistance in steering me down the right road would be great.

Rock Valley College rockvalleycollege.edu offers lots of different cooking classes, some that seem pretty basic, for their adult education classes. Bet you could call one of the instructors of those classes if you didn’t find what you are looking for.
Call Menu Makers on Perryville and Riverside. They might be able to direct you. They of course invite you in to make basic recipes with the food they buy. You just put it together, but they may know of someone who might teach you some basic lessons.
Bet if you just bought a cookbook from one of the churches in town that often feature regular kinds of dishes and bought the food, you’d be able to cook the kids up some good regular kinds of food right away. You might try calling one of the Lutheran or Methodist churches.

The internet is full of info. I have also learned a lot just watching the food channel. As a single father of 3 you may want to check out rachael rays 30 min meals.
I’m a big fan of Montreal steak seasoning. You don’t have to use it on just meat. It is a nice blend and goes well with everything. Cooking is not baking so you don’t have to worry about messing up.
You will want to pick up a temp gauge. Let the gauge take the guess work out of when your meats are cooked.
Have fun cooking. Sometimes things don’t work out. It happens. Just learn from your mistakes and keep trying.

They have one of the Rachael Ray DVD’s at the Rockford Public Library. Give it a try.
