Parents: Does your child give his/her teacher a Christmas gift?

December 8th, 2008 at 03:39pm Georgette Braun

Just curious about something:

Does your child give his/her teacher a gift at Christmas?gift.jpg

Is this something only elementary-aged kids do?

If your child is giving a gift to a teacher, what kind of gift?

And are they giving Christmas gifts only to classroom teachers? Music teachers? Gym teachers?

Do any of the local schools have policies regarding this?

Do tell about what you think is appropriate.

I like to send my children’s teachers at least their favorite soda or candy for Christmas. If you call the office of your child’s school, Iam sure that the office secretary would be able to help you out with a few favorites!

Good idea, Christy, about the favorite soda or candy. Thanks.

I do not believe that sending the teacher a gift is necessary. Perhaps a card would be a nice gesture instead (especially if it was handmade).

With so many students families having financial problems, I do not see a reason that anyone should go into deeper debt to give a gift.

Ummmm I can tell you as a teacher that rarely do we EVER feel appreciated for all we do. A gift is a must!! Preschool thru highschool, doesn’t matter. Hand sanitizer, food, or gift cards.

My child is sending a wooden calendar. It is really neat and says teachers have class on it. you can change the months and the dates and it has a slot for a note pad. This is something we picked up from a bargain catalog for 2.95 . I feel it is a nice way to say thanks for the job they do dealing with so many children everyday and having the patience to shape and mold them. Honestly people out there tip the newspaper guy, tip the mailman, garbage men etc….we do not …but we do give to the one that spends 1/3 of our children’s lives with them….

My boys have always had amazing teachers, so I like getting them a gift to show our appreciation. Plus I think it teaches children to be givers too. I always budget them in at Christmas. I get them a $15-$20 gift.

Since when do teacher’s get a good salary?

Last time I checked, the teachers working at private schools are making around $25k. Try living on that Joy.
