A story about a new baby-sitting service that matches parents with sitters in a speed-dating-type format will run in Thursday’s GO section.
Tell here in comments about your baby-sitting experiences (without naming names, please).

When I was in middle school, I agreed to babysit for one of my teachers, who was a single mom. Her two boys behaved fine, but when 11 o’clock rolled around, she wasn’t back, even though she said she’d be back by then. This was in the dark ages, before cell phones, so I couldn’t call her, but I did call dad to let him know. Midnight, nothing. Finally, at 1 am, she came in, drunk as a skunk. She asked if she could drive me home - NOT! She paid me by check - it bounced! Baby sitters, be sure YOU are safe, too. And don’t accept a check as payment!

Lisa: Good advice.
I remember a long time ago when I was baby-sitting that I watched a rerun of “The Birds” on TV when the kids were asleep, and I got kind of scared. I heard every noise from the furnace.
As a parent, I was fortunate enough to have two sisters from our church to choose from, as well as others from our church’s youth group. That worked very well.

We hired an acquaintance’s 16-year-old daughter in a pinch because we had a family funeral to go to. When we came home after only two hours, we found our child watching his second movie and the sitter laying on the couch texting her friends. So, that can only mean she set him in front of the TV the whole time we were gone. We will not hire her again. We pay a good hourly wage and for that, we expect the sitter to engage our child, not let the TV do the sitting.
We have also had wonderful sitters who play with our child, read to him, feed him, tidy the house, etc. If I could give advice to any young sitter out there, I’d tell him or her to treat babysitting as a real job and do what you are paid for. Parents really appreciate a good sitter and will hire you again and again if you do.
