Byron winery to open April 23

Hailey’s Winery & Vineyard will host its soft opening April 23 and a grand opening May 2 and 3 at 114 S. Franklin St. (off Route 2), Byron.
It will feature nine wine varieties — four whites, three reds, a cranberry and an apple — for tasting and selling, along with homemade bread, Wisconsin cheeses and chocolates. For more information, call 815-234-2220.
I always enjoy the comparatively scenic drive from Rockford, along the Rock River, down Route 2 to Byron and Oregon. Now we can add the wine-tasting to our list of places to check out along the way.
What other places would you recommend visiting on such a drive, besides Lowden State Park to see the statue of Chief Black Hawk?
