Are you tipping more, less, the same?

I know you’re probably eating out less than you did before the recession.

Just wondering if your tipping pattern has changed?

Since the recession started, have you been tipping at restaurants more/less/the same?

I usually tip with at least a 20% minimum. I’ve always been a working-class stiff and can appreciate how hard it is to earn a living. Waitstaff work is a hard job, generally with terrible base pay and no benefits, so they depend on that money. We generally eat meals out only once a week and seldom go to the fancy schmancy spots so I feel it’s no hardship for me to add a little more to the tip. I love to mock my sister who pulls out her “discreet” tip calculation card after a meal and computes to the nearest nickle ( and almost factors in the numismatic value of the coins).
I’ve always told my kids, “If you can’t afford to tip, you can’t afford to eat”.

Hoke: I like that piece of advice you give your kids.

Well i agree if can’t tip then you should just stay home and eat. What a hard job. My wife and I always tip 30% for a great job for a very poor job 15% because they still worked there butts off. Harder than I work. The crap they have to put up with is unreal. love you folks for the service you give to all of us some!!!!

As a server for the last 30 years I agree with the comments above. We work for as little as $3.09 per hour, there are no benefits, no paid time off and no holiday pay. I have worked every Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter because those days fall on my normal working days. I do the best I can possibly do, always trying to put on that smile even though some customers are impossible to please but there is always the ones who are thankful for that refill of coffee or a minute to chat. Alot of people forget, the wait staff does not cook your meal, we only serve it and it is not our fault if it is not correct!! Overall, Rockford patrons are easy to please and are thankful for the service and tip accordingly. It is a very hard, back breaking job and I for one survive soley on the tips as those are my wages.
