The first Remedies Ball netted $38,000 for Remedies Inc. last Saturday at the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center in Rockford.
That included $1,725 paid for four purses donated by Judge Janet Holmgren, Judge Rosemary Collins, WREX-13 anchor Dani Maxwell and musician Jodi Beach and packed with personal items like they’d carry in their own purses.

Remedies Inc. is the new name of groups formerly known as PHASE and WAVE, organizations that respectively help those with substance abuse problems and domestic violence issues. Fomerly, the group’s fundraiser was known as the Teddy Bear Ball. The amount of money raised this year at the event was a record, said Karen Gill, vice president of operations and fund development. Attendance was 225 people, also a record.

If your group is hosting a Christmas Cookie Walk Dec. 4, 5 or 6 in Winnebago, Boone or Ogle counties, we’d like to know about it by 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 30.
We plan to publish a list in GO on Dec. 4 and in our online GO calendar. You can either post the info here or e-mail me at gbraun@rrstar.com or both.
Include time it starts and ends, day, date, where it will be held including the name of the location and the address, and a phone number to call if people have questions.
I already have cookie walk info for Prince of Peace and Rocktown Township Historical Society Museum in Rockton; St. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, St. Anthony of Padua and Second Congregational in Rockford; and Concordia Lutheran Church, Machesney Park. So no need to send again.
If you’re hosting a Christmas Cookie Walk after Dec. 6, still send the info, and we’ll post it in our online calendar.

My commute home from the News Tower in Rockford to Loves Park has been dinged.
For months, I was getting a nostalgic charge out of seeing the Squirt painting on a building at Route 251 and River Lane. But a few weeks ago, it disappeared. Siding is all that’s in its place now.
KATIE BACKMAN | ROCKFORD REGISTER STAR (April 25) The Parkside Uniforms building, 5502 N. Second St., Loves Park, was demolished in March. A Squirt advertisement is painted on the adjacent building. Nearby business owners say they think the advertisement dates back to the 1950s. Bob Champion, owner of the building, said he has to reside the building.

Chemistry professor Deborah Breiter of Rockford College was slated to be included in “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” last Sunday about the Stott family from Lena, but her scene did not make the final cut.
You can see her segment from the show’s online bonus scenes here. Crews filmed her during their taping of the construction of the Stott home in September. She is shown donating lab glassware to family members and demonstrating a fun experiment, making ice cream with liquid nitrogen in the lab.

In case you were wondering, I donned a Catwoman costume last Friday, the 13th, for a black-cat-themed luncheon fashion show, Puttin’ on the Glitz (other photos here), to benefit SwedishAmerican’s Regional Cancer Center.
