I am dancing like never before

Last year, I gave free beer away while it lasted to those who had paid to vote for me to win the People’s Choice at Dancing with the Rockford Stars.

Notes on dancing w/divas and other Bone Soiree tidbits

Add comment July 20th, 2009

A few musings about the Bone Soiree fundraiser at and for the Burpee Museum of Natural History in Rockford Saturday night:

1. Ouch. Rockford alderman Joe Sosnowski can bend backwards pretty-back-achingly far. Congrats to him and Laura Gibbs, WREX anchor, who won the Dancing with the TV Divas contest via audience applause, as well as the online vote on my blog. (Yeah, that’s me in the middle in the background, pointing with amused delight. I was a judge with Judge Rosemary Collins and Rep. Dave Winters.)

2. Ouch 2: The crowd of 185 or so was maybe half the size as last year’s. Blame the economy, publicity, overcast skies.

3. Darn. Wish I would have won the two-night stay in a condo overlooking Millennium Park in Chicago that was donated by the Kalchbrenners for an auction item. It went for way more than double my paltry $325 bid.

4. What a nice kid.  Near the end of the night, the pre-teen son of Joe Bruscato, Winnebago County State’s Attorney who competed with Alice Barr of WIFR in the contest, said he wanted to have his photo taken in a photo booth with me. He’d inquired about what the booth was for. I told him and asked if he wanted to have his picture taken with me. Then I thought better of it. “Why don’t you go get your sister or ask one of those pretty diva dancers if they want to have their picture taken with you?” I asked him. “No, I want to take a picture with you,” he said. He probably didn’t want to have to go find someone else. We were standing five feet from the photo booth. But it made my night. If he ever runs for political office, he’s got my vote.

Are you going to watch Idol or Dancing finals tonight?

3 comments May 19th, 2009

First of all, don’t cringe in all your superiority and tell me I’m a boor because I can’t wait to watch two season final  competitions tonight: “Dancing with the Stars” and “American Idol.

The competitors are so close in “Dancing,” and I’m soooo curious about whether the androgynous but terrifically voiced Adam Lambert will outperform the more comfortable Kris Allen.

Which show will you watch tonight?

Newly engaged want to learn The Obama Dance

Add comment March 19th, 2009

Julie Dale, who teaches dance classes at Rock Valley College, says many newly engaged couples want to learn what they are calling “The Obama Dance.”

You remember, it’s the dignified two-step slow-dance the President and Michelle Obama did as Beyonce sang “At Last,” Etta James’ 1961 R&B classic at the Neighborhood Inaugural Ball on Jan. 20.

If you want to take lessons or merely dance at dance events, call Dale at 815-718-1814.

By the way, James wasn’t too happy with Beyonce singing her song at the inauguration, according to stories on Show Hype.

And the winner is …. Vote now for Rockford TV personality/politician dancers

18 comments July 15th, 2008

The vote is now closed, as of 5 p.m. Friday, July 18.

And the winner is ….

Kimberly Nelson, WQRF-39 anchor and WTVO-17 reporter, and State Senator Dave Syverson, R-Rockford, are the winners of the just-for-fun “Dancing with the TV Divas” vote at the Ask Geo blog at http://blogs.e-rockford.com/askgeo/.
They captured 49 percent (23,528) of the 48,337 votes cast since the poll opened Tuesday. Voting stopped at 5 p.m. Friday.
Alice Barr, WIFR-23 reporter, and Rockford Ald. Doug Mark, R-3, finished second of the three couples, with 35 percent, or 16,918 votes. Laura Gibbs, WREX-13 reporter, and State Rep. Dave Winters, finished third, with 16 percent, or 7,891 votes.
The number of votes cast was a record or near-record for any rrstar.com poll.
While this vote was just for the heck of it, the real winners will be chosen by audience applause Saturday at the dance competition at the Bone Soiree fundraiser at the Burpee Museum of Natural History, 737 N. Main St., Rockford. Tickets at $90 are available in advance and at the door. For more information, call 815-965-3433 or go to burpee.org.

Check out below a rehearsal video of the three teams.
