51st Commencement Exercises at Rock Valley College May 12

Rock Valley College will graduate 1,236 students this spring, and 552 of them will participate in RVC’s 51st annual commencement exercises on Friday, May 12, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. in the Physical Education Center (PEC).

The student speaker at this year’s ceremony will be Billy Brown. Billy was nominated for this special honor because of his exceptional character, work ethic, and academic performance, and for serving as a model for other students, especially minority males. Described as a natural leader and an outstanding student in the classroom, Billy has used his time at Rock Valley College to develop as a student, as a professional, and as a person.

While reflecting on his time spent at RVC, Billy says for him it was about making connections. As the vice-president for the Campus Activities Board, Billy had the opportunity to meet new people, interact with a diverse group of students, and develop professional skills, all of which allowed him flourish at RVC. He served as the Business Engagement Liaison as a student worker for the High School Connections department where he helped develop programs that cultivate relationships with juniors and seniors from the local public high schools. Billy also volunteers as a mentor for younger at-risk males in the community.

Billy plans to transfer to Illinois State University to continue studying Business Administration. Some day he would like to own his own business, but he also has aspirations to work in politics. He recently worked on the campaign for Winnebago County Board Chairman Frank Haney and developed a real interest in the political process.

Billy was born and raised in Rockford and graduated from Guilford High School in 2014.

Ten students were nominated this year and six chose to audition their speech for the panel of judges.
