Bricks & Clicks
The Rockford Register Star is more than a newspaper: the ink on print or the “bricks” in the News Tower. We’re a multimedia news and information company: the “clicks” on our Web site and the TV clips on WREX-13. This blog explains our fast-changing media environment and interacts with our readers to show how and why we do what we do.

in today’s register star, we introduced a new monthly magazine called relish.

it has recipes, tips on healthy eating and information on the latest gadgets for your home. my boss made the african peanut stew, and it tastes pretty awesome.

its companion web site offers a searchable database of recipes, plus podcasts and vodcasts. overall, user-friendly.

if you like to cook (and i do), check it out!

This photo appeared on the front page of Tuesday’s newspaper. I share because my sons are in it.

Happy New Year

Kids look up as confetti falls from the second floor of the Discovery Center Museum on Dec. 31, 2007, during New Year’s Eve celebration. Caleb Rathbun (second from left center) and Bethany Fingerle (third from left center) celebrate the new year in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, at 2 p.m. Central time.

Luke (kid with glasses, bottom right) and Abraham (wearing Green Bay Packers jersey) had a blast ringing in several new years across the globe Monday at the Discovery Center. They went with their day care friends.

I knew going into the media business that the odds of my children getting featured on our Web site or in our newspaper pages would be slim. Newsroom staffers don’t ever want to give the impression that our family and friends get published because of who we are. In this case, my boys were at a public event that the Register Star covered. He got the best shot and then realized who my boys were.

So, how about that? Like any mom, I e-mailed this URL to my family and friends and put it on my personal blog. I even grabbed a few copies of the newspaper so that I can get the front page framed for them.
