Hackers

A Regular Bricks and Clicks reader wondered why I hadn’t commented on the recent “Scientology attacks.” Well, Dude, here you go …
No matter how you feel about Scientology, hacking into the church’s Web site is just plain wrong. A group calling itself “Anonymous” posted anti-Scientology messages on the church’s site. This PC World article delves deeper and has some good links including to this Gawker post (which includes video of Tom Cruise talking about Scientology).
I don’t get Scientology, and I am no fan of Tom Cruise (who seems to be the main face of the religion). But there are more ethical ways to getting your message out there than taking over a Web site.

We think it’s interesting that, knowing that we posted a comment to this article over a week ago, our comment is nowhere to be found. If you’re going to allow comments, and something is posted that does not have any offensive material in it, coming from someone who knows more about the agenda you are reporting on than you do, you shouldn’t moderate the information away.
If you’re going to moderate away the comments that you don’t like, especially ones that legitimately question your newspaper’s journalistic integrity on an issue, then maybe you shouldn’t allow comments at all. That would fit the agenda better than making people think that there is a free flow of information here.
That being said, we were sorry to hear about the problems in your area today. You can feel free to moderate this away… we don’t expect to see it posted after what happened to our last one.
