It’s been awhile, but I made an appearance on TV last night to hype our Election 2008 site. Particularly, I touted our presidential contribution and compare local candidates databases. You’ll have to let me know how I did.
The weirdest thing about going on WREX-13 is the two-second delay. In our studio, there’s a TV that airs the broadcast live. There’s also a monitor that I look at while talking to Dani Maxwell and Eric Wilson. The sound and image from the TV is two seconds after what I see in the monitor and hear in my ear piece. It’s weird.
Still, the segment went pretty well. I even interacted with the B-roll. (That’s the video that’s shown while I am talking so that you don’t see my mug on camera the whole time.)
Watch the video and give me some feedback.

In the news business, you deal with the public a lot. Most of the exchange is pleasant, but every once in awhile you come across a “Brenda.”
Using public access TV, Brenda Lowe asked that a GateHouse Media colleague in Needham, Mass., be fired. In an e-mail today to those who work in new media (online, mostly), Editor Greg Reibman said that Lowe had called for his head in a public access TV commentary. He also shared this:
I posted it on our blog and as you can see it has generated an interesting conversation about blogs and our terms of use policy.
A common theme was expressed in e-mail discussion about this today. Most newsrooms have Brendas. I’ve only been here seven years. To my knowlege, we’ve not had a Brenda air a TV spot — at least not during my tenure.
Check it out and share your thoughts. Curious to know what you think.

My beloved Packers lost last night, so I won’t be blogging all the time on Pack Smack. If you have hadn’t a chance to check out our special report, you should. We had a lot of fun. And besides, there’s always next year.

i got a google alert on this article about how the media industry is handling story comments. basically, the headline is that most newspapers allow them, but they differ on how they regulate/moderate them. some require registration. some only post those approved by humans, which can be a ton of work.
we hope to have comments restored on stories here, with registration.

Whoo, hoo. The Packers are playing Sunday for the opportunity to go to the Super Bowl. Here’s one fan who isn’t shy about telling you who she’s rooting for Sunday. I also wanted to share that we launched Pack Smack, a blog about, well, the Packers. I’ll be adding my obsessive fan thoughts there. Others will give a more neutral viewpoint. (Don’t say I didn’t warn you.) We also have a new special report that we will continue to populate with content. Enjoy.

a while back, i blogged about the chicago tribune’s makeover online.
today, the trib unveiled its redesign — narrower, like the register star became in 2006, and taking out “the big blue background” of its masthead. the publisher and editor explain the changes here.
looks good and clean.

We got a mention on Charles Apple’s blog yesterday. Apple is the “graphics guru of The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Va.” And he liked our online coverage and special report page on the Boone tornado. Read this post.
(Check out the “Part 1″ and “Part 2″ videos on the special report page. More coming.)
