Bricks & Clicks
The Rockford Register Star is more than a newspaper: the ink on print or the “bricks” in the News Tower. We’re a multimedia news and information company: the “clicks” on our Web site and the TV clips on WREX-13. This blog explains our fast-changing media environment and interacts with our readers to show how and why we do what we do.

Learning from No. 4

Geri Nikolai, a Register Star reporter and perhaps the biggest Packer fan in our newsroom, e-mailed a great column today on Poynter’s Web site. (Poynter is in St. Petersburg, Fla., and is a school for journalists.)

Jacqui Banaszynski shares how journalists could learn a thing or two from Brett Favre. She offers up a playbook for newsrooms to follow. I loved it (it’s no secret who I root for) and wanted to share with you.

Point size

The No. 1 complaint I’ve received since the new rrstar.com debuted Wednesday night is this: You changed the point size on the type.

We didn’t. But apparently, it appeared like we did on some readers’ browsers. So, I offered them this tip:

I’ll share a little trick with you assuming you use Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox as your browser. If you do this, you shouldn’t have to adjust the point size again (unless you want to).

If you hold the “Control” key down and move the “scroll wheel” on your mouse, the font size will increase or decrease based on the direction you move the wheel. This a really neat feature with these browsers.

I heard back from one of the readers who said this worked. If you have any issues with point size on any Web site, this should work.
