Bricks & Clicks
The Rockford Register Star is more than a newspaper: the ink on print or the “bricks” in the News Tower. We’re a multimedia news and information company: the “clicks” on our Web site and the TV clips on WREX-13. This blog explains our fast-changing media environment and interacts with our readers to show how and why we do what we do.

Cheney, naked-lady reflection big news

April 11th, 2008 at 12:51pm Anna Derocher

In this biz, we have slow news days. Today must be one of ‘em. The Associated Press, other national media and bloggers are going nuts over this photograph of VP Dick Cheney.

Cheney sunglasses

The photo, which was posted on the White House Web site, shows Cheney wearing sunglasses. Here’s the story from AP:

Cheney sunglasses show reflection that some think is naked woman
It’s not

WASHINGTON — Get real, people.

That is not a naked woman reflected in Vice President Dick Cheney’s sunglasses. Although it kind of appears to be.

If you blow up the picture, you can see it is Cheney’s hand gripping the handle of a fishing rod.

The picture was posted on the White House Web site as one in a series of photos of Cheney outdoors. It created a buzz on the Internet on Friday and some cable television shows.

I don’t see it, but the image ignited discussions across the WWW.

We could have posted this as a news story on rrstar.com. Decided it against it. Even though we’re having a slow news day.

Instead, I posted the story here on the blog to see what you all think. Is this news?

It’s not news. Actually it looks more like a Praying Mantis staring at him.

This really is a stretch and not newsworthy at all. Would probably really be a hot topic if you put it on \"Applesauce\".

It’s about as much news as a corn flake for sale on eBay. But the RRStar would never put such nonsense on their website. I mean, the RRStar only reports real news. Right? Right? Come on guys, seriously - get off your high horse. All facets of the media are the same.

    Matt,

I anticipated that the corn flake would come up. The only argument I’ll offer is that the corn flake did look like Illinois and we chose to “report” for many reasons. One was that the flake was selling on eBay. Then later because it was going for an obscene amount of money.

Plus, our readers did click on that story. Page traffic spiked. Weird, huh. Kind of like what’s happening on this blog post today.

Paul: Applesauce is inclined to pay attention to Cheney only when he shoots somebody in the face or orchestrates the torture of terrorism suspects (as we see here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/blog/2008/04/10/BL2008041002069.html?hpid=opinionsbox1)
