Bricks & Clicks
The Rockford Register Star is more than a newspaper: the ink on print or the “bricks” in the News Tower. We’re a multimedia news and information company: the “clicks” on our Web site and the TV clips on WREX-13. This blog explains our fast-changing media environment and interacts with our readers to show how and why we do what we do.

ever since we posted photos of old gas station prices and asked readers for their memories of how much gas cost per gallon when they got their drivers licenses, we’ve gotten responses from across the country.

back as far as the late 1980s, when i got my license, gas was under a buck: i remember 88 cents for unleaded at the mobil station near the hardee’s where i worked.

i love discovering your stories. especially because you’ve been telling us what cars you drove, too.

keep ‘em coming.

I remember gas being somewhere between 25-30 cents a gallon in the late 60\’s early 70\’s. I also remember gas \"wars\", where the stations on adjacent corners would try and beat the others prices for a couple days or a week. The more stations at a particular corner lowered the prices more. I had a 67\’ Pontiac and a 57\’ chevy bel-air with a 327 and I thought that 5 bucks to fill was too much. Now I pay 30-50 dollars a tank depending on which car I take. HAHA. Grew up in Rockford, now living in San Diego.
