Bricks & Clicks
The Rockford Register Star is more than a newspaper: the ink on print or the “bricks” in the News Tower. We’re a multimedia news and information company: the “clicks” on our Web site and the TV clips on WREX-13. This blog explains our fast-changing media environment and interacts with our readers to show how and why we do what we do.

Please shovel. It’s the polite thing to do

In this morning’s paper,  we gave you a “friendly reminder”:

Our newspaper carriers (and others who deliver) have a tough time of it each winter when home- and business owners forget to shovel and salt. Help keep them safe by removing snow and ice — and by keeping the lights on for those dark morning hours. Thank you.

Personally, I think shoveling is the right thing to do and the polite thing to do. Must be my Wisconsin upbringing. I’m tired of people saying that “my generation” is lazy and doesn’t do it. It’s everyone’s responsibility.

We were inspired to publish the editor’s note because of another note we received from the “wife of a very dedicated carrier.”

MY HUSBAND IS A CARRIER. HE LOVES IT. HOWEVER, HE IS 70 YEARS OLD AND DOES A GREAT JOB, AND HIS DOCTORS ALL THINK A GREAT FORM OF EXERCISE.

LAST YEAR HE TOOK SEVERAL SEVERE FALLS AT CUSTOMER LOCATIONS. ONCE HE PUT OUT HIS BACK BECAUSE HE LANDED ON A LARGE CHUCK OF ICE AT A CUSTOMER’S HOUSE ON HIS SIDEWALK AT THE END OF HIS WALKWAY. HE WAS MISERABLE FOR WEEKS.

LAST WINTER, HE HAD ABOUT 7 SERIOUS FALLS. I KNOW FOR A FACT HE WAS NOT ALONE.

Please keep carriers and school-bound children in mind when you clear your sidewalks. Thanks!

It shouldn’t just be the polite thing to do. It should be the law.
Commercial property is required to have their walks shoveled. Residential property should also.

hokumboy If it should be the law.. Then it should be the law that all streets in Rockford have sidewalks. There are many streets here that don’t have sidewalks or like on my street, its so broken and cracked you can’t shovel it.

    I agree Roger,
It should be the law that all streets have walks, but our city and county seem to cater to the developers by allowing them to save a few bucks by not providing them. As far as the existing walks? Little Prince Larry needs that “infrastructure improvement money” to pay for his River Walk.
I admit I have no walk on one side of my home. It would be pretty much impossible for me, or the city, to construct one. But, my front is shoveled by nightfall after each and every snow. And, it was when I was working too. My steps are cleared of all ice and snow so the postman can do his job without worrying about breaking his neck, and I even do a shortcut path from my home to my neighbors. With more and more people walking or riding the bus to work a little common courtesy would make their way a lot easier.
