Bricks & Clicks
The Rockford Register Star is more than a newspaper: the ink on print or the “bricks” in the News Tower. We’re a multimedia news and information company: the “clicks” on our Web site and the TV clips on WREX-13. This blog explains our fast-changing media environment and interacts with our readers to show how and why we do what we do.

All inauguration, all the time … and we have someone there

Today and Tuesday, all eyes are on our nation’s capital for the historic presidential inauguration of Barack Obama.

We are providing full inauguration coverage at this site, as we pointed out last week.

If you watched the Lincoln Memorial concert on TV yesterday, you saw the start of festivities. So did our own Scott Morgan; we sent the photographer to Washington to cover the event because Obama is from our state, Illinois. Check out his amazing work so far.

Morgan is just one of four GateHouse journalists sent to cover the event for the state and the nation (and really, there are others there, too, covering their own local stories). Of highest interest to you: Bernie Schoenburg of Springfield will be writing about the Illinois galas; he also was credentialed to attend the inauguration itself.

Business on Sunday: Look, there’s more!

Add comment January 16th, 2009

Starting Sunday, the BusinessRockford.com section will grow to absorb the features you loved from the weekly magazine, which we halted last week amid challenging economic conditions.

You’ll find the week in review, Annette LaCross’ column, Face of Business, calendar, briefs, On the Move, Snapshot, the SCORE column, best blogs/sites, public records, photos, Star 60 and the stories you’ve come to expect from the magazine and the Sunday section.

The good news about the move is that this content will reach 70,000 readers on Sundays instead of the 20,000 targeted by the magazine.

Chicago’s ‘new’ tabloid

This week, in a bid to remain competitive with the Sun-Times, the Chicago Tribune announced it will sell tab versions of its newspaper on the weekdays for those who pick it up at the newsstand and commuter stations in Chicago and the ‘burbs. It’s more handy to read on the train, for example.

The Tribune will remain a broadsheet for home delivery subscribers. The full story is here. Sounds like more work, but we’ll see if it’s worth it.

This story reminds me that the Rockford Register Star’s front-page digest format, which has appeared in all copies of the paper since May 1999, was originally conceived as a “single-copy” concept. Readers have almost universally embraced it ever since as a quick scan of the day’s news.

I think Monday’s tabs will be free as a first-day promotion. Otherwise, the price is the same 75 cents.

Go green. It’s not just for the Web

Starting Sunday, Life&Style will get a little greener.

Inside, you’ll find a new weekly Go Green page devoted to local and national news, trends, events and advice that will help you be more Earth-friendly.

It also will include excerpts from my Go Green blog, which launched last May. If you have any questions, call Life&Style editor Lisa Glowinski at 815-987-1379.

Of course, remember to recycle your newspaper when you’re done!

Our Webmaster, Josh Glovinsky, built this fantastic inauguration Web site over the last couple weeks. Take some time and check it out. We’ve partnered with our sister sites in GateHouse. We’ll have much more content there in the coming days, so be patient. And soon, you’ll find a banner on the rrstar.com home page taking you directly to the new site.

It’s almost inauguration time

Register Star tech folks and journalists have been working on an inauguration Web site that will be live on our site and hundreds of other GateHouse sites. We expect to launch the site next week.

The site will be filled with stories, opinions and photos from GateHouse journalists. Register Star photojournalist Scott Morgan will join three other GateHouse staffers in Washington, D.C., to cover Barack Obama’s inauguration.

Stay tuned. We’ll share the site next week.

You’ll have to wait until Feb. 20

Voting wrapped up this week for the Rockford Woman of the Year Award.

Here’s a mini update: We received 4,722 votes. We’ll announce the winner at an invitation-only reception next month and in the March/April issue of Rockford Woman magazine. I’ve had a few people ask me already about who won, so my lips are sealed.

In the meantime, I’m trying to assign some stories about how women can get more/better sleep. If you have advice or questions, let me know!

Welcome to 2009. Your mom’s on Facebook

Add comment January 7th, 2009

I can’t find where I read it, but one of the top trends in 2009 is supposed to be that “your parents will be on Facebook.”

Or maybe even Grandpa!

This creeps out teenagers and young adults to no end. If I were young, I would freak, too.

My mom’s not on Facebook, but she does use our own private family social networking site from Ning, which is pretty sweet; I built it last year. And my 6-year-old knows what FB looks like. She called me out when it was on my phone the other day. Good reminder to put the darn thing down.

Tell us what you think

My boss blogged last week about challenges the Register Star will face in 2009. She followed up with a post asking you to tell us what you think we should do.

It’s an opportunity for you to tell us what you would do.
