Bricks & Clicks
The Rockford Register Star is more than a newspaper: the ink on print or the “bricks” in the News Tower. We’re a multimedia news and information company: the “clicks” on our Web site and the TV clips on WREX-13. This blog explains our fast-changing media environment and interacts with our readers to show how and why we do what we do.

Hard to believe gas is below 3 bucks

Add comment October 17th, 2008

One week ago, we celebrated when we filled up the tank at $3.33.

Today, gas is $2.99.

While “pain at the pump” isn’t as painful as it used to be, it reminded me that we have a special report that highlight’s Thomas Bona’s musings, links and recent coverage.

And don’t forget to have fun looking at old gas station photos and readers’ memories of the price of gas when they started driving.

the newspaper cutback you’re not hearing about

not layoffs. not buyouts. not hours. just a change to 4-day workweeks.

many industries have looked to this as a solution to high gas prices, and at least a few journalists are giving it a shot.

we have a few people here who work under this scenario, but it’s more about their jobs than gas. decent perk, though: three days off.

as for saving gas and the future of journalism, i see opposite forces at work. on the one hand, we are becoming mobile journalists, filing stories from anywhere. on the other hand, the best work is done in person, not over the phone, so that often requires four wheels and fossil fuels.

Breaking news Thursday

Add comment May 22nd, 2008

OK. I am just going to use a cliche. When it rains, it pours. That is, when news happens, it really happens. I am officially calling today breaking news Thursday. It’s not even 1 p.m. yet and here are the major stories we’re working on today:

  1. Alan Beaman’s 1993 murder conviction reversed by Illinois Supreme Court today.
  2. Triplets with rare disease born at Rockford Memorial Hospital.
  3. Gas tops $4/gallon in Rockford.

Typically, right before Memorial Day, we struggle to fill our Web sites and our newspapers with newsy news. Not today or tomorrow. And the day certainly isn’t over yet.
