Bricks & Clicks
The Rockford Register Star is more than a newspaper: the ink on print or the “bricks” in the News Tower. We’re a multimedia news and information company: the “clicks” on our Web site and the TV clips on WREX-13. This blog explains our fast-changing media environment and interacts with our readers to show how and why we do what we do.

What’s up, doc?

This Sunday in the Register Star, you’ll find our annual Health Directory, a listing of hundreds of doctors and clinics in the Rock River Valley, organized by specialty.

It’s a handy size to keep in your “junk drawer.” Or if you prefer, you can search 24/7 at HealthyRockford.com. I especially like that you can customize search by gender and health system, for example.

Win a Wii Fit!

If you’ve ever tried Wii Fit, the exercise video game (program is probably a better word) made for the Nintendo Wii system, you probably “evangelize” about how great it is. At least I have.

I bought the game for my family for Christmas and didn’t intend to use it myself, but now I’m using it the most — three or four times a week. It’s just plain fun and a way to be active for 30 minutes instead of sitting on the couch.

This month, you have a chance to win Wii Fit when you sign up for a weekly newsletter from HealthyRockford.com. Of course, you have to have the Wii console for this to work. Good luck!

for your healthy dose of news

in june, we launched healthyrockford.com — a one-stop shop for local health, healthy living and health care news. the site is rich with doctor listings, Harvard Medical School A-Z disease/condition information, local and national news and advice from local experts.

you’ve seen a sampling of content in sunday’s life&style section, with a healthyrockford.com page inside. you’ve also seen stories reappear in the local and business sections, whether we’re writing about quadruplets born at rockford memorial or the college of medicine’s effort to retain local talent.

this week, you’ll start seeing more in the newspaper. the go section will carry useful bits of information, like calendar items and tips. and the thursday people section will focus on, naturally, people.

fyi, healthyrockford.com’s editor is mike dedoncker; the reporter is melissa westphal. they have started appearing each monday at 5 p.m. on wrex-13’s newscast to promote healthyrockford.com content as well.

at healthyrockford.com, our local web site for health and healthy living news, we’ve been looking for people using the popular wii fit as a workout.

so far, we’ve had one great response. i gotta believe there are more of you out there stepping “on board.” so write mike!
on a personal note: i want to try this thing. would be a nice supplement to going to the gym … and god forbid, going outdoors.

… check out our own mike dedoncker in his healthyrockford.com welcome video in this story.

our new web site devoted to health and healthy living in the rock river valley launches today. my fellow b&c blogger anna voelker already gave you a rundown a few weeks ago.

basically, you can find local and national news, expert advice from almost 20 area professionals, a searchable directory of health care providers, job listings, calendar, links to government web sites and an a-z guide to conditions and diseases from harvard health publications.

we’ve been working on this site for at least the last six months andĀ plan to keep improving it in the coming days and weeks. feel free to fill out our survey here.

Get healthy, people

We plan to launch a health Web site in early June. It’s called HealthyRockford.com (don’t try the URL yet … it doesn’t work). This site will be your go-to guide for all things health in the Rock River Valley. The site’s editor, Mike DeDoncker, is already blogging. Check out Like Mike. Also blogging is HealthyRockford.com reporter Deb Austin. Her blog is about the business of health, and it’s called Pulse.

We’ve also asked health experts in the community to blog. Doctors, nurses and other health professionals are contributing to the Our Health Experts blog already. Great discussion there about kidney health, vampires in blood labs and pain management.

Get the best fitness and healthy living advice from our panel of local experts on the Good for You blog. Read about the benefits of “moderate physical activity” and why sitting a lot isn’t the best for your waistline.

Oh, before I forget, here’s a sneak peek of the site …
