Bricks & Clicks
The Rockford Register Star is more than a newspaper: the ink on print or the “bricks” in the News Tower. We’re a multimedia news and information company: the “clicks” on our Web site and the TV clips on WREX-13. This blog explains our fast-changing media environment and interacts with our readers to show how and why we do what we do.

Remembering the Minneapolis bridge collapse

1 comment July 31st, 2008

Tomorrow it’ll be one year since the bridge collapsed in Minneapolis. As cliche as it is … it’s hard to believe it’s been one year. Today at Poynter, Sara Quinn looks at how the Minneapolis Star Tribune covered the tragedy.

This interactive is incredible. And more journalists should tell stories like this … take readers to the scene and let them experience the moments, good and bad.

The Star Tribune used an aerial photo of the bridge moments after the collapse. The staff identified as many of the vehicles and the people in them as it could. Reporters did interviews with survivors and victims’ families. It choked me up. Take a look.

at the register star, like i just mentioned,  you can order a t-shirt with a photo on it.

but at cnn.com, you can order a t-shirt with a headline on it. though i learned that hackers got a little naughty on this app.

of course, the onion satirical newspaper offers funny headline t-shirts, too, like “area man.” click at your own risk, since we know how naughty they can be.

how did we ever live w/o google maps?

this morning, we have a couple of cool maps that help tell the stories visually.

with the announcement of rockford airport service to detroit and denver, we show you where you can go from RFD. plus you can check out the destination’s parking, flight delays and directions.

and with our story about match day, you can see where students from the university of illinois college of medicine at rockford are going for their residencies, complete with photos.

how do we do this? just by using a google account to customize what we need. we also do things as simple as providing a map when there is an accident, fire or closed road.

wqad is running a survey similar to one by minnesota public radio. by answering where you stand on the issues, it tells you how the presidential candidates rate.

ok, so this is no exact science, but it is interactive and helpful to our audience to get them thinking about the election in a constructive manner. and since people like to share these things in e-mail, it starts a dialogue.

for example, my parents ended up with duncan hunter, and they had never heard of him before (above is an ap file photo of him). they also wondered, jokingly, how their daughter could end up so differently from them politically (let’s just say i don’t often vote republican, though i have for governor twice in tommy thompson and george ryan, and how was i to know that ryan would end up in prison?).
