Bricks & Clicks
The Rockford Register Star is more than a newspaper: the ink on print or the “bricks” in the News Tower. We’re a multimedia news and information company: the “clicks” on our Web site and the TV clips on WREX-13. This blog explains our fast-changing media environment and interacts with our readers to show how and why we do what we do.

If you want the TV book, you can have it, but …

20 comments January 26th, 2009

We announced this Sunday:

The Register Star will stop delivering the Sunday TV book in ALL copies of the newspaper starting Feb. 15, as a cost-cutting move. All single-copy newspapers will continue to carry the book, but home-delivery subscribers will only receive it by request.

So how can you get yours?

1. Send an e-mail to tvbook@rrstar.com.

2. Go to www.rrstar.com/tvbook.

3. Call 815-987-1332 or 815-987-1335.

4. Fill out the coupon appearing regularly in the newspaper.

The last day to sign up for TV book delivery without missing an issue will be Thursday, Feb. 12. You can opt in at any time.

Sure, everyone listened to President Obama during his inauguration, but no one missed Aretha Franklin’s hat.

Someone decided to get clever and start a gallery of photos with the hat placed on them. Above is the News Tower with it, thanks to our graphics guy Chris Soprych. My favorite one is Darth Vader, so scroll through!

A lot of talent and a little bit of luck

We’ve been sharing our inauguration coverage with you over the last week, and I told you already that the Register Star’s Scott Morgan was there.

But did you see that Scott had not just one but two opportunities to photograph the president Tuesday (after an hour and a half of sleep and five hours in line for security)?

The first came along the parade route, where he was stationed to capture the Illinois float and Illinois performers. Barack and Michelle Obama just happened to get out of the car at the right time. Ta da! This graced the cover of our special 10-page section today; you can get extra copies at retail locations that carry the newspaper.

The second came at the Home States Ball. I love this shot because of all the glowing cameras and camera phones.

Great job, Scott!

Note: If you’d like to buy page reprints, they’re available here.

Power of 2. We’re not the only ones there

Today’s the big day. Scott Morgan delivered great photos of Illinois folks yesterday here and here. One of them was of WREX-13’s Eric Wilson, who is in Washington, D.C., as well. See installments from him here, including phone interviews from the news casts.

Stay with rrstar.com’s special inauguration site today.

Business on Sunday: Look, there’s more!

Add comment January 16th, 2009

Starting Sunday, the BusinessRockford.com section will grow to absorb the features you loved from the weekly magazine, which we halted last week amid challenging economic conditions.

You’ll find the week in review, Annette LaCross’ column, Face of Business, calendar, briefs, On the Move, Snapshot, the SCORE column, best blogs/sites, public records, photos, Star 60 and the stories you’ve come to expect from the magazine and the Sunday section.

The good news about the move is that this content will reach 70,000 readers on Sundays instead of the 20,000 targeted by the magazine.

Tell us what you think

My boss blogged last week about challenges the Register Star will face in 2009. She followed up with a post asking you to tell us what you think we should do.

It’s an opportunity for you to tell us what you would do.

Happy New Year from our newsroom to your room

Wally Haas, our editorial page editor and a “long-timer” here, suggested we take a newsroom staff photo since it’s been since the early 2000s since we’ve done one. So many faces have changed, he reasoned. And heck, it’s a piece of our history.

It’s the most people I’ve ever seen in one of our photos like this.

Here’s wishing you a great 2009. I think most of us hope it’s better than 2008.

(Thanks, Scott Morgan, for taking the photo and sneaking into it — he’s farthest left.)

UPDATE: I, too, was frustrated that you can’t see faces close enough, so I’ve now uploaded the 6MB original.

From the in-case-you-missed-it department…

Our “runway looks” are getting noticed…

Over the weekend, we shared this light video on how the Register Star is stocked with vests to wear at accidents and other road scenes.

Well, the National Press Photographers Association, the group that issues these vests, paid attention.

It’s not about fashion. It’s about safety

You might see Register Star staffers wearing orange vests in the near future.

A new federal law requires anyone working on a federal highway to wear approved safety vests. Rather than worry about which are federal and which are not, whom it applies to or not, we — and the National Press Photographers Association and other media organizations — are adopting a “wear it anyway” policy

Reporters and visual journalists working a breaking news assignment where emergency crews are likely to be need to wear the vests, especially if out on a road or street.

We have 22 of these, and they came in this week.

Originally we were just going to take a photo and show you, but multimedia guru Chris Soprych enrolled delivery editor Collin Quick to have a little fun with a video.

Thanks to you, 4,558 children will have a better Christmas

I’ve always known that the Register Star’s long-running Empty Stocking Fund is an admirable holiday charity, giving toys and mittens/gloves to children in need in Winnebago County. I volunteer each year to unload the truck on the morning of the giveaway, handing boxes over bucket-brigade style into Hope Place’s gym.

I’m happy to report that we’ve met and exceeded our $40,000 goal thanks to readers and a thoughtful $5,000 donation from Associated Bank. The bank presented the check last night at its holiday party.

Thank you to everyone who donated, from families to people on bus trips to businesses.
