Bricks & Clicks
The Rockford Register Star is more than a newspaper: the ink on print or the “bricks” in the News Tower. We’re a multimedia news and information company: the “clicks” on our Web site and the TV clips on WREX-13. This blog explains our fast-changing media environment and interacts with our readers to show how and why we do what we do.

Do you agree with this? Why? Why not?

Mash it all together

I found Mashable, a blog that explains anything and everything about social networking. Interesting posts on everything from Twitter to how to share music via social networking. I have a lot of reading to do. First, I am going to check out this whole Susan Boyle YouTube video thing.

All inauguration, all the time … and we have someone there

Today and Tuesday, all eyes are on our nation’s capital for the historic presidential inauguration of Barack Obama.

We are providing full inauguration coverage at this site, as we pointed out last week.

If you watched the Lincoln Memorial concert on TV yesterday, you saw the start of festivities. So did our own Scott Morgan; we sent the photographer to Washington to cover the event because Obama is from our state, Illinois. Check out his amazing work so far.

Morgan is just one of four GateHouse journalists sent to cover the event for the state and the nation (and really, there are others there, too, covering their own local stories). Of highest interest to you: Bernie Schoenburg of Springfield will be writing about the Illinois galas; he also was credentialed to attend the inauguration itself.

Postscript: Excalibur & Excelsior

This is what I wrote to the newsroom staff today:

I’ve been here for 14 years now, and I have to say “outstanding job!” to everyone who handled our annual Excalibur & Excelsior awards.

From our Nov. 30 tab to this week’s previews, from our special section online to our live coverage across all platforms, we’ve done an outstanding job showing the impact of good people and organizations in our community. It also demonstrates our power to do good when we recognize that work with these awards.

Thanks for great hustle and quotes by Corina Curry, Georgette Braun and Melissa Westphal; design work by Eloisa Oceguera; and Web work by Anna Voelker, Andy Brown, Jeniece Smith and the delivery desk.

If you haven’t seen the record-60 photos in our gallery by Scott Morgan and Eddy Montville, check them out.

And the video is coming soon from Chris Soprych.

If I forgot anyone, please forgive me.

Good work!

It’s been 45 years since Kennedy’s assassination

1 comment November 22nd, 2008

John F. Kennedy

On Nov. 22, 1963, 45 years ago today, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. I wasn’t alive then. But my mother was 6 years old when the media reported three bullets had hit our president and killed him. She remembers her parents glued in front of the TV that evening. Her mother saved all the front pages of the newspapers from that week, and now I have them.

We marked the anniversary of Kennedy’s death with an online package that included a historic gallery of photos and front pages, archive stories and video of with area residents recalling where they were that day. You’ll also find a link to other historical packages we’ve put together.

By the way, the photo above was published in the Rockford Register-Republic on Oct. 26, 1960. Kennedy was in Rockford for a Democratic presidential rally at the Coronado Theatre. He’s heading west on East State Street. You can see the News Tower in the background.

What’s ‘On the Line’? With an election, a lot

Political Editor Chuck Sweeny and photographer/videographer Scott Morgan traveled the Amtrak rails this weekend to hear from voters — average Americans — as we approach the November presidential election.

Sweeny chose The City of New Orleans line from Chicago’s Union State to New Orleans because he likes the Steve Goodman song. In the past, he’s done road trips west and south instead of attending the political conventions, as he had done for many years.

You can catch his tales on his blog, Sweeny Report. We plan to pull together the blog entries, photos and videos on a special report page. And we’ll also pull it together for Sunday’s Register Star.

The headlines? People are steaming mad over the financial mess and ensuing bailout. And they’re pretty torn over John McCain and Barack Obama.

This is my favorite post. … We know some of you enjoyed his encounters, too. One commenter said, “Ain’t America great?!”

rockford’s very own michael phelps works on the first floor

did you know that the rockford register star has its very own michael phelps?

the ad designer, who lives in rockford and has worked here for six years, is a good sport (ha ha) about sharing his name with the olympic superstar, though he usually goes by “mike.”

he said he actually got more reaction to his name during the olympics four years ago. a friend of his sent him the cover of sporting news, with the headline declaring “michael phelps is the sexiest man in a swimsuit.” it’s framed and hanging on his kitchen wall.

“a headline like that? i love it!” he said.

the father of three, who has coached basketball, volleyball and soccer, has watched some of the games this time around, especially when you-know-who has been in the pool.

“it’s always fun sitting around and hearing my name on tv like that.”

p.s. cool story here about phelps’ dolphin kick.

this parting shot from a former wall street journal writer and editor asserts (jokes?) there’s more money to be made in panhandling than journalism.

i like this parting shot better. and i like the concept of the column — to give voice to the thousands leaving the biz and reflect what others still around might be thinking.

Vote for the best local TV personality/politician dancing duo

Add comment July 16th, 2008

Want to see local TV personalities and politicians square off in a dancing competition? Well, you can. Check out Georgette Braun’s blog, Ask Geo, for the video. And make sure to cast your vote for the couple you think will take home the prize in the “Dancing with the TV Divas” competition at a fundraiser for Burpee Museum. There are nearly 7,000 votes cast already.

Here’s a look at the couples …
Gibbs and Winters
Laura Gibbs, WREX-13 reporter; State Rep. Dave Winters, R-Shirland

Nelson and Syverson
Kimberly Nelson, FOX-39 anchor, WTVO-17 reporter; State Sen. Dave Syverson, R-Rockford

‘Mama, can we go the newspaper way?’

1 comment June 26th, 2008

Brought my kids, Luke and Abraham, with me into work a few mornings this week because they had Vacation Bible School right around the corner at St. James. They love coming into the newsroom. For the first time, we went into the building from the back and they got to see the GO section running on the press and being carried by the “gripper” into the packaging department. Boy, they were fascinated. It was hard to drag them up to the newsroom after that.

Now, they ask if we can take the “newspaper way” into the building.

Their wide-eyed wonder over what we do here each day made me smile. Whether it’s putting news and information in print or via the World Wide Web, we do make a difference each and every day in the community. And, yes, I’m sure there’s some snarky response to that. But love us or hate us, we are the primary source of news and information in this community. And that means something.

Here’s a shot of my boys at my sister’s April wedding.
