Personal Emails at Work

Add comment August 12th, 2008

In today’s fast paced technological world, many office workers shoot off personal emails from their work email account without giving it a second thought. According to a MSNBC survey, 15 percent of workers “constantly” send or receive personal email using their work account. 30 percent responded “very often” and 45 percent of workers said “sometimes or occasionally.”  10 percent responded that they never have used their work email for personal uses.

Here are some things to think about before you email your spouse or friend:

The email does not actually belong to you.  While it might have your name or signature, many companies have electronic policies that state that email sent and received is company property.

Your company might be monitoring your email. Also stated in some electronic policies, employers have a right to monitor your computer usage. This includes email and Internet use.

While it might be convenient, the risk of getting in trouble is not worth it. Be clear on your employer’s policy and abide by their rules!

Tell us what you think! Do you use your work account to send personal emails?

More Crazy Excuses for Calling In!

Add comment July 2nd, 2008

As a follow up to Brent’s post, here are some more excuses that I’ve heard…

“I had a tooth ache, and the antibiotic makes me nauseous.”

“I had a flat tire on my bike.”

“I am cooking, and I can’t make it to work.”

“I can’t go to work, I have a party to go to.”

“My air conditioning is not working.”

“Someone stole my lunch.”

Calling into work? Don’t use these excuses!

I hate calling into work. Unless I can’t get out of bed, I’m making it into work.  There’s too much to be done and money to be made. One thing I’ve learned from my experience in staffing is that not everybody feels the same way. I must admit that I have become numb to the standard reasons for calling in to work:  “I’m sick, no childcare, car won’t start, forgot I had a court date,” etc. However, every once and a while, I hear bizarre excuses that differ from the norm.

Here are some of the strangest excuses I’ve heard for not going to work:

1) “I ended up getting tickets to a Cubs game and am too hung over to go in.”

2) “Somebody stole my identity.”

3) “My girlfriend slashed all of my tires.”

4) “I got pulled over on my way to work and I got arrested.”

5) “I really don’t feel like going in today.”

Relationships in a Multi-Generational Workforce

Add comment June 18th, 2008

According to a survey conducted by the Opinion Research Corp, workers have the strongest relationships with co-workers of their same generation.

59% of 18-24 year olds said they have the strongest bond with colleagues who are 29 years old and younger, while 67% of 25 to 34 year olds and 52% of 35-44 year olds said to have the strongest bond with those ages 30-40.

Do you think this is true?

According to a CareerBuilder.com survey, 49% of workers take a coffee break at least once during the day, and 32% take two coffee breaks per day. The survey also showed the top 10 most unusual activities that workers have done on their coffee breaks.  They are:

1)     Proposed marriage
2)     Judged a “Best Legs” contest
3)     Shrink wrapped a co-workers new car
4)     Step aerobics
5)     Left the office to chase a weasel outside
6)     Had a burping contest
7)     Ran a race in a wedding dress
8)     Kissed another employee in the stairwell
9)     Did a fast reenactment of the “Rocky Horror Picture Show”
10)   Walked a newborn turkey around the building
