U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, the second most powerful senator in Washington, D.C., has gone off to Greece, Turkey and Cyprus. He’s taken Illinois Treasurer Alexi Giannoulious with him. Alexi is a favorite of Barack Obama, and according to The Capitol Fax Blog, he’s being groomed to run for the Senate in 2010. They’re on a trade mission and to seek a solution to the long-simmering dispute between Turk and Greek Cypriots. According to CapFax, Alexi is paying for the trip with his own money.
Back to me: If it’s true that the president of the United States and the second-most powerful senator want Alexi to be the senator, Roland Burris will have one, tough time getting any traction should he decide to seek election in 2010, assuming he’s still in office when the time comes to make such a decision.
