Add comment November 6th, 2009

Park City Restaurant and Pancake House, 4820 N. Second St., has closed its doors, but work already has started to reopen the establishment.

The restaurant first opened in 2004. Executive Plastering Co. of Machesney Park is the contractor doing exterior work on the building now.

Fortino Corrillo is the person reopening the restaurant, according to Loves Park city records. The business is already permitted to operate as a restaurant, but officials are unsure what kind of food will be served when the business reopens.

Bob’s Ace Hardware, a business fixture on Rockford’s southeast side, is closing its doors.

Steve Westlund, who owns and runs the store with his wife Janice, said today the decision to close was made for several reasons. The bad economy was a factor, but Westlund, who is 59, said he and his wife are ready to retire.

“We’ve had a lot of good years in Rockford, and we want to thank the community for everything,” Westlund said.

The store will be closed on Tuesday, Oct. 27, so employees can prepare the space for its liquidation sale. The store will reopen at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, and will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays until inventory, fixtures and equipment are sold.

Westlund said everything in stock will be sold at 50 percent off the regular price, including shelving, tools, housewares, gifts, paint and clothing.

The Westlund family owns the Ace building. Westlund said he’s had offers to buy the business, but he thinks the tough economy has made it difficult to pull deals together. He assumes the family will sell the building but said that decision will be made later.

Bob’s Ace Hardware is located at 2710 20th St., near 20th Street and Harrison Avenue. Call the store at 815-398-0111 for more information.

Cub Foods closing in Beloit, Wis.

Add comment January 13th, 2009

Located just over the stateline, Cub foods’ store in Beloit, Wis., is a popular stop for many South Beloit residents. Cub Foods, which is a subsidiary of SuperValu, announced Monday it is closing the store in mid-March.

Cub Foods also was one of the places Illinois residents would flock to when The Big Game, a multi-state lottery that included Wisconsin, reached high prize totals. The company had a store in Loves Park for more than 20 years, but Cub Foods closed it in 2004 and sold the property after it decided to exit the Chicago and northern Illinois markets.

The Loves Park Cub Foods is now a Valli Produce.

For South Beloit residents, the closing will mean a slightly longer trip to visit a major store. Roscoe has a Hilander Foods and Rockton has a Walmart Superstore. Woodman’s has a Beloit, Wis. location on the city’s far northwest side.

Adieu, Water Street Cafe

Gerlinde’s Water Street Cafe, 115 N. Water St., has closed for business.

Owner Gerlinde Sampson opened her French-inspired downtown cafe six years ago and said the combination of a poor economy and decreased traffic contributed to her decision to close.

“It has gotten worse every year, especially the last year and a half,” Sampson said. “I will miss it all.”

Sampson, who grew up in Europe, has lived in the region for about 25 years. She plans to pursue catering and has had offers to open a restaurant on the city’s east side.

To contact her regarding catering, e-mail Sampson at gersampson@aol.com.

Sampson leased the cafe building, and the owners are looking to sell or lease again. Call 815-963-5125 for more information.

Sweet Southern Soul bids farewell

The latest effort to bring a soul food restaurant to College Avenue didn’t stick. Judy Johnson, the maven of River District Catering, opened Sweet Southern Soul in the Campus Square shopping center at College Avenue and Seminary Street on Sept. 3. She’s closed the restaurant, however, saying that the economy and negative perception of the neighborhood as crime-ridden were too much for her to overcome.

“We never could get it up and running,” she said.

Johnson’s catering business is still operating out of the former restaurant location, and she’s turning to new uses for the space. First, she’s renting out the kitchen on a part- or full-time basis to people who may need commercial kitchen space but don’t want to go to the expense of setting one up. Second, she’s renting out the dining space for meetings, wedding receptions and other social gatherings.

“We’re trying to figure out how to take the things we have in place and figure out new ways to market and use them,” she said.

Local grocer Gray’s IGA is closing its location at 11th Street and Sandy Hollow Road. According to WREX, signs at the store tell customers they need to find a new place to shop. Employees aren’t sure if they will be offered jobs at other Gray’s locations.

The store’s last day is Dec. 27.

Farewell, Firefly. We hardly knew ye.

For nearly 70 years, the Mayflower was a fine-dining staple on North Second Street in Loves Park. Since the original Mayflower closed in January 1999, several restaurant groups have tried and failed to build a succesful business in the still-stylish building. The latest effort, the Firefly, closed earlier this month and the building is back up for lease.

Here’s the timeline of the Mayflower evolution:

  • The Mayflower was open from the early 1930s until January 1999
  • Reopened Nov. 1, 1999, by Todd LaMere as LaMere’s Mayflower.
  • Todd LaMere changed the name to LaMere’s North in October of 2000 but closed abruptly in May 2001.
  • In May 2002, the owner of the Morning Glory Restaurant reopens the Mayflower under its historic name.
  • Sometime between 2002 and 2005 there was The  Cave, a NASCAR-themed restaurant that escaped Register Star attention.
  • In 2005, it reopened as JRichard’s Mayflower and closed in July 2007.
  • This January, the Nuttall family bought the building – all the other attempts were leasing the building – with a menu leaning toward healthy eating.
