Cubs Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg, now manager of Class A Peoria, will bring the Chiefs to Wrigley Field for a Midwest League game against the Kane County Cougars.
I’m a big fan of the last line of the Associated Press story: “The Cubs said it in a release they believe it is the first minor league game in the ball park’s 94-year history.”
Let me save the White Sox fans some trouble and finish the punchline for them: ” … other than every game involving the Cubs for the past 94 years!”

Remember when the Cubs were worried about Ted Lilly and Rich Hill? Who worries about pitching when you can hit like this? The Cubs suddenly look like the Red Sox and Yankees who, yes, always had good pitching, but could also bomb their way out of most pitching glitches with a nonstop lineup of heavy hitters. The Cubs lead the Major Leagues in on-base percentage. That hasn’t happened since 1945, which, not-so-coincidentally was the last time they reached the World Series. The Cubs also lead all teams in runs scored. … Alfonso Soriano returning to the top of the lineup won’t destroy that. The No. 2 team in both on-base percentage and runs scored is Arizona, which features strikeout-happy, speed/power Soriano clone Chris Young batting leadoff.

While watching the today’s top of the sixth inning with the Cubs winning 1-0 thanks to a homer from pitcher Carlos Zambrano, office Brewers fan Geri Nikolai walked by and stopped briefly for Ryan Braun’s at bat to say “If Zambrano can do it, Braun can do it.” And right before I could respond with “Yeah, but not off of Zambrano”, Braun took Zambrano deep into the Wrigley Field bleachers on the very next pitch. I’m currently working on getting her to say “If the Red Sox can win the World Series, so can the Cubs.”
