‘Determine a C-Notes contest’ contest

1 comment August 31st, 2008

Like Jennie Pollock in the Go Green blog, I, too, want to share the wealth and bounty with loyal visitors.

But what would be fair? The 10th poster to this entry? A slogan contest? An essay competition? Rock-paper-scissors?

I’m baffled. So, to debafflize, I turn the contest duties over to you. Come up with the ideal contest, and you can win an official shot glass from the Cubby Bear!

prize

This esteemed prize, never used for its intended purpose in life, is from the renowned Garcia Shot Glass Collection, soon to be part of a major exhibit at the Smithsonian’s new branch office in Tuscola.

One entry please. The winner will be chosen Sept. 6. Creativity is encouraged. Entries from the Bridgeport faithful also are welcome, but if they’re too snarky toward Cubs fans, they probably won’t win. The decision of the judge is final.

Incantation

Bill Buckner (1977-84) and Mark Prior (2002-06) are probably the North Siders most associated with the Double Deuce, but other notables include Billy Hatcher (1984-85), Jerry Mumphrey (1986-88), Mike Harkey (1990-93) and Rondell White(2000-01).

Amazing. I didn’t get a chance to update the list this weekend, and the number has not moved in the past two days with the Cubs’ defeats coupled with the Brewers’ victories. I do not claim to possess total control over time and space; just most of it.

Just mark off the spot on your specially marked scorecard when the Fox announcers bring up for the umpteenth time, “Theodore Roosevelt was president when the Cubs last won the World Series,” “Eamus Catuli,” “Bartman,” “Curses,” “Brock for Broglio” and “Ronnie ‘Woo-Woo.”

Questions, taking questions

It’s not a matter of “If” the Cubs can win lately, it’s “Who”? Who will be the hero today?

Wednesday, it’s Jason Marquis. Thursday, Aramis Ramirez. Friday, it’s Alfonso Soriano, with an assist from Phillies SS Jimmy Rollins for throwing away the easiest double play ball he could ever turn.

And now, we’ll saw this lady in half

Classic Cubs Carmen Fanzone (1971-74) and Pete LaCock (1975-76) wore this before the throw-in in the Bowa-DeJesus trade.

Coming back like that against a quality team … very nice.

Seems like nine months

But it’s only nine games ago that the Cubs last played an opponent which had a winning record (Aug. 17, a 9-2 victory over the Marlins in Florida). The Phillies are fighting with the aforementioned Marlins and unmentionable (for Ron Santo) New York Mets for the NL East title.

Cubbie Nation backlash useless

Barack Obama’s recent comment about Cubs fans is only fair.

“You go to Wrigley Field, you have a beer, beautiful people up there. People aren’t watching the game. It’s not serious. White Sox, that’s baseball. South Side.”

After all, he’s speaking as a White Sox fan. They love to exploit that over-played Cubs fan stereotype.

If what Obama said does touch a nerve, it should only anger someone as a fan, not a November voter. Cubs fans/Obama supporters need to respect his White Sox loyalty, albeit misguided. And as fellow C-Notes blogger Tony Garcia noted, his loyalty just better stay consistent once October rolls around.

As for Derrek Lee’s response?

Some believe the first baseman owes Cubbie Nation an apology for agreeing with Obama. It’s understandable for fans to be a little perturbed with Lee; but if he’s going to apologize for something, it should be for the fact he still leads the National League in grounding into double plays.

Cubs first under review

Thursday’s 7 p.m. Cubs-Phillies game at Wrigley Field will be the first official MLB game under the newly approved instant replay system.

Does this go hand-in-hand with MLB’s push to speed up game-play?

It’s possible. Instead of having a manager storm out of the dugout to dispute a close home run decision for five to seven minutes, the review system could limit the confusion to only a couple of minutes.

Then again, don’t think Lou Piniella will hesitate to argue with a TV monitor if a Cubs’ basket shot is reversed.

A nuclear bomb is not an option

1 comment August 26th, 2008

A former colleague, when asked to pick a favorite in a Cowboys-Packers game, said he hoped a nuclear bomb would fall on the stadium and wipe out both teams. He despised both teams that much. He was joking, I think.

If he were to be asked the same question about the Cardinals-Brewers series, he’d probably have the same response, but we here at C-Notes are not that bloodthirsty. (Or is it radiation thirsty?)

C-Note contributor Tony Garcia called to say that he’s going against baseball logic and hoping the Brewers sweep the Cardinals and put a stake in the heart of St. Louis’ post-season hopes. He said he’s going to root for the better team because he dislikes the Cardinals that much.

Because I love everybody, I hope the two-game series is a split so the Cubs can gain ground on both teams as they sweep the Pirates.

I’d like to see the Cubs maintain a comfortable, but not insurmountable, lead. If the race stays relatively close, I think it will keep the team sharp for the playoffs.

Pick a card, any card

Lennie Merullo (1941), one of Mike Royko’s favorite punching bags; Calvin Coolidge Julius Caesar Tuskahoma McLish (1951), one of baseball’s greatest recorded names; and Mike Vail (1978-80), dealt to the Cubs for “Tarzan” Joe Wallis and sent away for Hector “Heity” Cruz, wore today’s featured digits proudly.

Also, love it when the Cubs take on the “step on their throat” mentality, especially with sub-.500 teams such as the Pirates.
