Oh, the agony

You all mocked the Sports Illustrated cover jinx when Kosuke Fukudome was on in May.

Now look.

And Cubs skipper Lou Piniella is not going to be patient much longer. From the postgame notes of The Associated Press:

Cubs manager Lou Piniella wants more production from All-Star outfielder Kosuke Fukudome. If he doesn’t start producing, the Cubs’ right fielder and biggest offseason acquisition (four years, $48 million) could have his playing time reduced. “We need him to start hitting,” Piniella said before Sunday’s game. And if Fukudome doesn’t get out of his slump, Piniella said he would have to start looking for other options. That could mean more playing time for Reed Johnson in right or for Mike Fontenot at second with Mark DeRosa moving from second to right. Fukudome went 0-for-4 Sunday night and is in a 30-for-138 slump over his last 39 games.

Carpenter’s place

… is going to be on the DL again.

The Cardinals print more money than the Cubs, yet St. Louis ownership banked on pitchers returning from serious injuries as their trading deadline moves. I know the Cubs are happy that their legendary tight-fistedness has gone to the Arched City.

Getting by

Wow! Ryan Dempster’s getting himself into and out of more trouble than Governor Rod.

The former Cubs closer is also at 86 pitches through 5 against the Cardinals tonight. I’m guessing Jon Miller will be pronouncing Jeff Samarjdjdjdsjhda sometime soon.
