Do not order Drano milkshakes, Cubs fans

I have one of my best friends from high school already in woe-is-us mode. A pal from college is simultaneously dreading the future while laughing at the present. And he has a few real-life things to worry about, such as recovering from Gustav and preparing for Ike.

And the Trib spinmeisters, God bless their corporate bottom-line hearts, are apparently spinning the “wild-card-is-just-as-good” pablum.

I’m not going to talk any of you from jumping off the bandwagon. Just don’t expect me to lend a hand when you want to return.

For those who will stay, please listen to the wise words from a Python:

No Wild Card for Cubs

With the Cubs hitting a rough patch, the Tribune has floated the idea that the Cubs might be better off with Milwaukee passing them and Chicago settling for the Wild Card. The idea is they would be better off playing the Mets in the first round than the Diamondbacks and their awesome pitching trio of Brandon Webb, Dan Haren and Randy Johnson. … Um, like facing Johan Santana would be any easier? Has anyone noticed that the fearsome Diamondbacks are 12th in the Majors in ERA, one spot behind the Mets. And they are 19th in runs scored, 11 spots behind the Mets. The Cubs should WANT to play Arizona in the playoffs. The Diamondbacks are going to be the weakest of all possible playoff foes.

Cubs faithful without television access to tonight’s game vs. Reds …
