“America’s Next Top Model,” episode seven recap, by Chris Soprych of the Register Star.
It was a very special Kayla episode of “America’s Next Top Model” last night. Rockford contestant Kayla Ferrel went from almost being eliminated last week to getting second place this week. Kayla also won the first challenge, making her one of the “Grammy Girls” at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards in February 2011.For the Grammy Museum challenge each girl had to pick dress for the other. Kayla was paired with Liz, who wanted a long, flowing dress. But Kayla picked a rockin’ black sequined pants and top for Liz. Liz was livid but made it work, earning some points with the judges. Liz picked a short silver dress for Kayla that looked fantastic with her fiery red hair, plus she brought her personality to the table. In the end, team Kayla and Liz won, but there can be only one “Grammy Girl.” And the judges chose Kayla. Kayla’s reaction to her win was very emotional.
“I was the girl that didn’t even have a bed until I was 14 and just going from home to home. Because of my sexuality, I wasn’t accepted. And now I’m going to be at the Grammys handing somebody an award, and it means a lot to me.”
For the elimination challenge, the contestants were asked to pose as a famous fashion designer. Some girls were assigned designers that were men, which proved to be more of a challenge. Other girls could do no wrong, like five-time elimination challenge winner, Ann. She had to portray Asian-American designer Alexander Wang. The tall Texan placed third, breaking her unprecedented winning streak.
Kayla took the number two spot, portraying Vivienne Westwood, bringing energy, personality and life to the photo shoot. In fact, judge Nigel Barker said it was her best photo in the competition to date.
Kendal was sent home, and rightly so. There are still plenty of girls that need to go. I’m talking to you Jane and Esther. It seems that Kayla is on the rise and her number one competitor Ann is on the way down. But not so fast. Does disaster await Kayla in next week’s episode? That’s what we’re led to believe from the teasers clip from last night: “A stressful shoot triggers a painful emotional memory for Kayla.”
Last week, Kayla had to work through physical pain of swollen feet in ill-fitting shoes; next week, she has to work through some emotional pain. This might be the best time for a Kayla meltdown. We’re about halfway through the competition and there are still plenty of less-talented girls to be eliminated.
Could this work to Kayla’s advantage? Have the breakdown early in the episode and make a comeback, composed and professional to rock out the photo shoot?
