Hey, there’s an upside to my hiatus

You’ve noticed my lack of exercise this past week. (And, unless you’re a superhuman or a gym member, you haven’t judged.)

Sunday and Wednesday I took very, very sweaty bike rides; Monday, I opted for strength and stretching after a 15-minute brisk walk to warm up the muscles. That’s pretty much been it, unless you count my shopping trip Tuesday. Do I feel guilty? Not as much as I have during previous heat waves.

I’m becoming more accepting of my biology/temperature preferences: I like to bike when it’s warm and run when it’s cool. So why not, as I did inadvertently, train for running events in the late spring, hold back during the summertime rather than embitter myself as my performance drops, and pick training back up again for a late fall/early winter half marathon?

After all, the New York Times just did a piece on the effect of a woman’s menstrual cycle on her athletic performance (tl;dr: for endurance/strength, it doesn’t; at most, it slightly alters how she lands when jumping). The bonus tidbit that came out of it? University of Denmark researchers discovered that while women make fitness gains slower than men, their estrogen helps them retain that fitness longer during periods of inactivity.

The cherry on top is a discovery I made while barefoot a few nights ago: The blisters on my right foot have disappeared, both the nasty one on which I did at-home surgery and the more stubborn pinch callus on the side of my right big toe.

Check it out: My feet almost look normal!

I think your smart by trying different workouts. Probably better for overall body conditioning plus the high humidity can’t be good for anyone every day while exercising. I just keep on with my running, but drink a lot of water. Rock Cut offers a respite from the bike path and is a bit cooler too but the humidity is still killer. Good luck with your workouts. Just keep on doing something to stay active.
