As my friend Shayne once said, I’m a feral runner. She was referring to my iPod-free tendencies – which have changed just a little bit with my iPod upgrade – but it holds true for my hands-free approach.
It’s not that I don’t see the value of carrying a cellphone or water bottle. It’s more that when I try it, it seems to backfire. There’s no good place to put either item … the cellphone pocket in my running shorts would hold the penny phone my parents got for me and my sister back in high school, but not the more modern incarnation. And holding a water bottle, while a good workout for my arm, bothers my shoulder.
I’m not the only one vexed by the water bottle issue, though. Uber-runner Brian Hock of Cincinnati found himself tucking a half-empty bottle into the back of his shorts, which usually worked. But then the graphic designer had a better idea: Design a water bottle to specifically be carried on the waistband of the pants.
