Remember that family who vowed to eat locally?

Columnist Geri Nikolai wrote the original story about the Weichel-Holdmann family, who committed to going “locavore” for a year. Their photo from that May is above.
This week, she updates the effort of Lenae Weichel and Kevin Holdmann, with daughter Neva, 4, and son Kai, 15 months. The family has been blogging, too.
It’s quite interesting.
The family canned, froze, dried and stored so much food this summer, her winter “grocery” list consists only of milk, eggs and cheese, all of which she buys from local farmers or outlets. The root cellar contains squash, potatoes, onions, brussels sprouts, garlic and cabbage. Weichel canned all kinds of berries, jams, rhubarb, salsa, applesauce and more. A large freezer and two smaller ones are full of frozen vegetables of every variety. There’s a supply of dehydrated tomatoes, apples, pears and more.
