I wish I had more time to research this, but I will share what I know…
Sharon Hendrickson, one of my co-workers, told me about her cousin, Michael Alms, the founder of growingsolutions.com, which makes compost tea, an alternative to chemical fertilizers.
The Rockford native who now lives in California will be featured on “The Martha Stewart Show” on Thursday, which airs locally at 9 a.m. on WTVO-DT2, channel 16, over the air, and at 6 p.m. on Fine Living Network (Comcast channel 209).
“He originally sold some of his products to Martha’s gardners, and that is how she became interested in him. He has sold these around the world,” Sharon says.
As they say, “All roads lead to Rockford….” Another local connection to something big.

The Illinois Green Fleets site, part of the IEPA, is highlighting Rockford’s No Idle Zone effort on its home page.
Which leads me to ask: What does it mean to be a Green Fleet?
The Illinois Green Fleets Program is a voluntary program where businesses, government units, and other organizations in Illinois gain recognition and additional marketing opportunities for having clean, green, domestic, renewable, American fuel vehicles in their fleet. It is a program to recognize a fleet manager’s progressive efforts in using environmentally friendly vehicles and fuels to improve air quality while promoting our domestic fuels for greater national energy security.
Rockford Park District in Rockford/Winnebago County and Burkhardt’s BP Gas in Polo/Ogle County are listed.
