Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful will hold its Spring Metals and Electronics Drive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 7, in the south parking lot of Machesney Park Mall.
What you can’t bring? TVs.
What you can bring? Virtually all metal items: emptied snow blowers/lawn mowers, shovels, washers, dryers, microwaves, toasters, stoves, computers, stereos, file cabinets, desks, shelves, copy machines, bikes, patio furniture, aluminum siding, scrap metal, car batteries and cell phones. For $10, you can bring refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and dehumidifiers.
KNIB Executive Director Lori Gummow encourages people to participate because starting in 2012, the Illinois Electronic Products Recycling & Reuse Act will ban the disposal of computers and other electronics from landfills.
In 2010, the organization collected more than 155,000 pounds of recyclable materials from 1,574 households.
