I wrote about this a while back (geez, I’m doing a lot of updates this week), but you have a few more weeks to buy a raffle ticket to win a Smart Car. I was reminded by this when I saw Tuesday’s GO section.

A winner will be drawn July 4 for Blackhawk Learning Connection’s first raffle.

Blackhawk is a nonprofit licensed child-care facility that provides subsidized care for children 6 weeks to 10 years old. Since founding in Rockford in 1969, it has provided care for more than 2,500 children.

The Smart Fortwo features fuel economy of 33 mpg city/41 mpg highway, a five-speed automatic transmission, a panoramic roof, front and side airbags (among other safety features) and a flat-folding passenger seat. See photos at blackhawklearning.com and smartusa.com.

Raffle tickets at blackhawklearning.com or 815-962-8853 are $20 each, four for $60 or eight for $100. They are $20 each at Alpine Bank locations, Logli, Meg’s Daily Grind, Fox 39 and WZOK. Most ticket sales end July 3.

The winner will be drawn July 4 at the Rockford Speedway. Racing that night starts at 7:07 p.m. (gates open at 5), a 10,000-watt fireworks show is planned, and you can buy raffle tickets from 5 to 8 p.m., when the drawing takes place. Entry to the speedway is $10 to $12 for adults, $5 to $6 for ages 6 to 11, free for 5 and younger.

You also can see the car and buy tickets at the speedway Saturday and July 3.

Call 815-962-8853.

I don’t watch HGTV, unlike many women my age…

However, the cable channel is giving away a “green home” in Floria and a GMC Sierra hybrid.

Take a virtual tour of the home here. And watch construction here.

The HGTV Green Home 2009 is a 2,430 square foot single-family residence with a 610 square-foot detached garage that has achieved the highest level of green certification available, LEED Platinum.

For Earth ‘Month’: You could win

2 comments April 2nd, 2009

Since Earth Day has grown into Earth Month, it seems, I have a few giveaways of “green” products I’ve received.

Round 1: A Fresh Wave package.

Fresh Wave is a natural odor neutralizer bassed in Illinois. The package includes 16 ounces of crystals, a 6.25 ounce candle and a 8 fluid ounce spray.

The company uses extracts of soy, lime, pine needle, aniseed, clove and cedar wood in its products, which are biodegradable and nontoxic. You can find products locally at places like Bob’s Ace Hardware in Rockford.

I will draw a winner at random. Email me at jpollock@rrstar.com by Friday, April 10. I need your name, daytime phone number and city of residence in your note.

Your Lucky day

I don’t usually read Lucky magazine because, frankly, I’m not much of a shopper.

But I stumbled upon it this month and found its green issue, which highlights its “online eco sourcebook,” a set of links broken down by fashion, home and beauty.

There’s also a green tip contest going on. Check out the message board. I like the idea of using dry spaghetti as a coffee stir-stick instead of the darn plastic ones. As a tea drinker, I’ve always thought that’s a waste. Also, someone pointed out that Keds has a green line.

P.S. Don’t forget about the giveaways I found last week.

Have you noticed a lot of green giveaways?

I have, at least in two of the magazines on my kitchen table. I guess Earth Day has a cool ring to it now for April.

Every Day with Rachael Ray (home of the Greenie Award) is giving away eco-friendly home/garden packages and green cleaners.

And Shape is giving away a bunch: Envirosax, a necklace, the “Big Green Purse” book…

If you know of others, chime in.
