Holistic Approaches to Depression

More than forty million people experience depression in the
United States and about fifteen million are clinically depressed.  Depression is often times “treated” with drugs or herbs however neither substance gets to the core of the problem.

People who experience depression often have nutritional deficiencies in general such as DHA, omega-3 or omega-6 EFA depletions.  Vitamins B12, B3, B5 and folate acid can also be contributing factors.  Certain medical conditions may also play a role or even be a primary cause, for example iron deficiency anemia, hypoglycemia, heavy metal toxicity, allerigies to food, PMS, chronic fatigue, anti-inflammatory drugs, birth control pills, alcohol, cigarettes, caffeine to name a few.

Changing ones diet and creating an optimal brain blood pH of about 7.46 can dramatically and quickly change and improve a persons state of mind and also cause symptoms of depression to disappear.  Exercise and lifestyle changes are extremely important.  Research shows exercise alone can give relief from depression in 80% of cases whereas in comparison, Prozac has about a 65 to 70% success rate.   The underlying supportive factor is in the diet and a way of life.   One needs to raise the endorphin level and once the program is active in the physical level, then examining the emotional & spiritual issues that may be involved.

The cells in the body function at their best when they are slightly alkaline on the pH scale. Most people are too acidic, which prevents the immune system from functioning at its best. Processed food, cooked food, meat, dairy, sugar, pollution, and stress are acid forming.  On the other hand, raw fruits and vegetables are highly alkalizing.   Removing acidity or reducing levels of acidity and becoming alkaline affect not only your state of mind, but overall general health, you feel better and other issues start heal and rejuvenate as well.
