Red, Bumpy Face? You Could Have Rosacea

Rosacea (pronounced roh-ZAY-sha) is a common disorder of the facial skin that affects about 16 million Americans and most people don’t know they have it.

It has been known to cause psychological, social and occupational problems if left untreated and in surveys, patients said their condition had lowered their self-confidence and had caused them to avoid public contact or cancel social engagements. Those who suffer with severe symptoms said the disorder had affected their professional interactions and they had even missed work because of their condition. Its cause is unknown and many of the symptoms include:

Redness or flushing on the cheeks, nose, chin, forehead or ears.
Small visible blood vessels on the face.
Bumps, swelling, pimples, burning, stinging and dry skin on the face.
Red, watery or irritated eyes.

Try to avoid sun exposure, hot or cold weather, wind, emotional stress, alcohol, spicy foods, heavy exercise, hot baths or showers and heated beverages. Many skin care and makeup products contain chemicals such as fragrances and essential oils that can trigger a reaction in your skin. Look for products containing anti-inflammatory ingredients like zinc oxide and topical vitamin C.  See your esthetician to learn about what types to avoid. To cover the redness avoid the popular green makeup tint and use foundation with a yellow undertone.

There is no cure but your physician can prescribe medications that can control the symptoms. You can also visit the National Rosacea Society at Rosacea.org for a wealth of information.

  1. I’ve had Rosacea for years, and I’ve had some success treating it with an over-the-counter gel called Prosacea. It costs about $7 or $8 for a tube of .75 ounces.

This is not a paid endorsement, by the way. I’m just a guy whose face tends toward redness.

  2. Thanks, Pat. I’ll have to check it out!
