The judge will see you now. Step into Springfield Bureau Chief Aaron Chambers’ chambers for an insider’s view on Illinois politics and government. No, Chambers isn’t a real judge. At least not in the sense of wearing a robe, wielding a gavel and issuing orders. But like a good judge, Chambers tells it like it is.

I am amazed at the outpouring of opinion on the Cole Hall proposal. It touches on so many different issues, in fact, that I can hardly keep track of them all -- the financial state of Illinois; the financial and infrastructure needs of Illinois higher education; the (un) trustworthiness of the governor; the responsibilities of public universities to taxpayers.
But maybe, the biggest issue of all and the one that's really touching nerves is this: how do we as a culture deal with violence and tragedy, and how much should we allow such an event to shape the life of the affected community afterward? How quickly should the community recover, and how do we define recovery? Will erasing the site really erase the bad memories, or perhaps magnify them?

Senator Burzynski,

Initially I was disappointed to hear that you were standing shoulder to shoulder with Gov. Blagojevich, but I am happy to see that you are doing what I believe to be the right thing and are stepping back and re-evaluating your position on the razing of Cole Hall. While it is undoubtedly a terrible tragedy that occurred at Cole Hall, I believe tearing it down would be fiscally irresponsible and would not honor those that lost their lives or were injured on that dreadful day. I believe renovating the facility would make the most sense given the current state of our state finances. It would also be a decision made, not so much on emotion, but because it's simply the right and honorable thing to do. It is my hope that this is what ultimately takes place.

Thank you for being the taxpayer's watch dog.
