The judge will see you now. Step into Springfield Bureau Chief Aaron Chambers’ chambers for an insider’s view on Illinois politics and government. No, Chambers isn’t a real judge. At least not in the sense of wearing a robe, wielding a gavel and issuing orders. But like a good judge, Chambers tells it like it is.

Tom Cross lost a lot of supporters and respect when he stonewalled Chris Lauzen's senate bill 600. When Tom Cross handed it over to Skip Saviano , Tom told the tale to GOP conservatives. Skip buried the bill in a coat closet down in Springfield so that it would die a natural death.
Tom is a decent guy but he made a huge mistake on that one. Now. the conservatives in the GOP hold him in low-regard like they do Big Jim Thompson. Tom has simply become one of the "Good Old Boys" down in Springfield or as John Kass would call them, "The Combine".

Tom Cross will never be Speaker. He's completely over his head. He was a former high school student of Hastert's at the same small school. Let's face it, that's the only reason he became the "golden boy." But with Hastert off the field, Cross is now a puppet without a puppeteer.

Most of the base can't stand Cross anyway. He votes like a Democrat, and seems to have a major problem with the truth. His dishonest handling of the SB600 direct elections legislation alone makes him unfit for any office

For a Republican to win governor, Rod would have to be the Democratic nominee. He is unlikely to be renominated, however, since his political weakness will surely draw strong primary competition should he choose to run again. How would the Republican do against, say, Lisa Madigan?
The future of the IL GOP is grim. Lackluster leadership, a divided base, and a state trending darker blue all add up to continued futility.
