It’s Cheap Trick Day — Now Go Vote!

Rockford’s greatest treasure, Cheap Trick, now has their own designated day in honor of their rockin’ achievements, and we just can’t get enough of the group that gave us classics like, “I Want You To Want Me,” and “Dream Police.”
A friend of mine, Derek Wright, maintains a music-related blog for the Northwest Herald, a newspaper in the Chicago Suburbs, and has been holding his own version of the NCAA March Madness tournament. His contest is not to find the best college basketball team in the nation, but rather to find the best music act in Illinois.
Perhaps this was predictable — after all, we know how good they are — but Cheap Trick is in the “championship game” against Carpentersville’s Smoking Popes. Derek accepts votes via e-mail, so head on over there and vote. Don’t let our boys down!
As you already know, the General Assembly last year named April 1 as Cheap Trick day. Although I was not in the statehouse last year, I’ve had it recounted to me several times that Rick Nielsen’s appearance was quite a hit. After all, the Legislature may now be filled with mature men in suits, but they were probably in their heyday in the ’70s when Cheap Trick burst onto the scene.
In honor of today’s Illinois holiday, the Daily Herald used Cheap Trick Day to look at other state-declared holidays. Up next: Crohn’s and Irritable Bowel Disease Day on April 11.

Rick Nielsen has been a friend of the family for years. In fact, as most of us in town, he went to school with my parents. Rick is a guy you can approach on the street and talk to him about that old T-bird he has…what a great car! It’s pretty neat to have a famous band in your neighborhood who are still part of the level headed community rather than moving out of town and forgetting their roots. I finally saw Cheap Trick for the first time last Saturday night in Dekalb and it was an awesome show! I will never forget when Sen. Dave Severson walked on stage and announced Cheap Trick Day and gave Rick and the band their plaque!! What an accomplishment. How many people do you actually know personally that have a day dedicated to them? That is awesome!
