Friday Night Flix going big time

Mike Dunn and the Rockford Area Venues and Entertainment Authority may have hit a home-run with the new Friday Night Flix in Davis Park. A free movie is being shown in the park each Friday night this summer.

The first week drew an estimated 450 spectators to see “Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.” After a rain out of a Harry Potter flick, Friday Night Flix was back with “Ghostbusters” last Friday drawing – get this – an estimated 1,000 visitors, Dunn said.

Dunn said not only were the crowds large enough to drain the RAVE’s reserves of free popcorn, but officials are talking about moving the event from Davis Park’s smaller north lawn to the park’s bigger Great Lawn area to the south.

I wonder if this means Friday Night Flix is gaining popularity in general or if it matters what movie is playing? Maybe “Ghostbusters” was a huge attraction. Guess we’ll have to see what kind of crowd “Apollo 13″ draws this Friday night to get an answer.
