I read Fortune’s 100 Great Things about America list today and have to admit I’ve never even heard of some of the “things” and I’ll also admit that more than a few of them wouldn’t even have ranked in the top 500 greatest things on my personal list.
I’m not sure Lady Gaga belongs on any America’s greatest-list (ranked #30) and I find the inclusion of Tupac’s hologram ranked at #12 to be highly suspect (one of those “things” I’ve never heard of). I’m a huge fan of the Pacific Coastal Highway (#58), Hershey’s (#57) and Shark Week (#76). I question how Tupac out ranked the polio vaccine and cheeseburger, though.
Snuggies came in at a surprising #20 on the list, you know…that blanket with the arms advertised on TV? I purchased one as a joke for my husband two years ago at Christmas and it remains the most fought over blanket in our house on chilly nights in front of the TV. The inclusion of Idaho potatoes, potato chips, Pop-Tarts and marshmallow Peeps are probably evidence of the obesity problem in the U.S.
This list started my mind on a path of what are the top 50 greatest things about northern Illinois (we’re much smaller so 50 sounded right to me!). The golf courses, the Rock River, Chocolate by Daniel and the Village of Winnebago 4th of July celebration top my list. What would you include on your list of 50 greatest things about northern Illinois?
