Export to Mexico-Update #2

Add comment July 10th, 2008

On my June 12th post, I discussed my first efforts to find distributors in Mexico. As it is developing, it is taking longer to generate the research. Unlike China, which reacted pretty quickly, Mexico will be taking 6-8 weeks. After my initial phone conference call, I sent a CD with product information on it. Last week, I received a confirming e-mail describing the process the State of Illinois office there was following.

Their strategy consists of developing a database of potential distributors and engineering firms in the major markets in Mexico. They will then do mass mailings using three different approaches; e-mail, postal service and fax. They will indicate that my company is looking for potential distributors/agents and direct them to our web site. Once they locate interested distributors, they will have them fill out a information form so they can be screened. After that, we would arrange visits and discussions.

Sounds like a good step by step process and one that hasn’t required me to jump on a plane just yet!
