Great story. I’ve posted about Wal Mart before and this article has some good lessons in it. I don’t know that this was some brave CEO who said “No” to Wal Mart. More so, he was making a strategic business decision to try not to undercut the “brand” that Snapper had become. And, by not selling to Wal Mart he was trying to preserve that brand. Similar to Stihl and how they advertise that you CANNOT buy their saws, trimmers, blowers, etc. at Home Depot, Lowe’s, et al. Snapper is targeting a higher end of customer who can afford a better product.
Sadly, though, there are plenty of people who must buy the $150 lawnmower because that’s what they can afford and that’s where Wal Mart has achieved its success.
